Job description

Established in 1997 by representatives from the Esquimalt, Beecher Bay, Pauquachin, Tsartlip, Songhees, Tsawout, Tseycum, and T’Sou-ke First Nations, NIȽ TU,O CFSS emerged as a response to concerns regarding the growing number of Coast Salish children within the foster care system. Currently, NIȽ TU,O CFSS serves seven South Island Coast Salish Communities, including Beecher Bay, Pauquachin, Tsartlip, Songhees, Tsawout, Tseycum, and T’Sou-ke.

NIȽ TU,O CFSS offers three streams of services, all aimed at maintaining Coast Salish children within their families and communities. The first stream, Family Support Work Program, provides goal-oriented one-on-on support to youth, parents, grandparents, and caregivers from any member Nation. The second stream consists of a number of life skills and cultural programs offered by Community Wellness Facilitators. The third stream is Support Services previously administered by the Ministry of Child & Family Development, referred to as delegated services. As a Delegated Children & Family Services Society, currently delegated at C4 level, NIȽ TU,O CFSS delivers various delegated services, including guardianship and care for children in continuing care, voluntary support services to families, voluntary care or special needs agreements, caregiver recruitment, training, and support, youth agreements, respite services, extended family programs, and agreements with young adults.

Position Summary:

As a Delegated Social Worker, you will ensure the safety and well-being of children in care by developing and supervising a comprehensive plan of care, informing caregivers of their responsibilities, monitor the placement of children, and provide guidance regarding children’s behavior. You will be part of a collaborative team, working alongside the community designate and the Ministry for Children and Family Development to contribute to NIȽTU,O’s mission across the entire social work service delivery spectrum.

We are currently looking for Social Workers who are able to practice in Family Services,



Voluntary Services, Guardianship, Resources or Recruitment and Retention. You will be working in a variety of situations, from individual sessions, integrated case management meetings and Community Practice Circles; with children, youth and parents, to extended families, peer- support groups and information/educational settings. This position will report to a Community Services Manager and work in the Southern Vancouver Island geographic area.

Preference may be given to applicants who are currently delegated to cover this term position.

Education Requirements:

· Bachelors of Social Work Degree or a Social Sciences degree OR a minimum or 5+ years of lived/work experience with the affiliated 7 nations that NILTU,O supports.

· Preference will be given to Candidates who have C3/C4 delegation

· Previous practicum in child and family welfare would be considered a robust asset

Technical Experience Requirements:

· In depth knowledge of AOPSI and agency’s policies, procedures, and practice manuals

· In-depth knowledge of CFCS Act and other related legislation

· Knowledge and appreciation of Coast Salish culture and history

· Experience in working with First Nation communities and aboriginal organizations mandated to provide health,



counselling and child and family services

·Knowledge of the intergenerational trauma that occurs as a result of colonization, including the impacts of the Indian Act, Residential Schools Sixties Scoop, and other oppressive systems and structures.

Technical Skill Requirements:

· Excellent interpersonal communication skills, both written and oral

· Computer proficiency in MS Office and ability to write detailed reports.

· Knowledge of the CFCSA and the understanding of the criteria used to assess risk.

· Ability to establish and maintain professional relationships with a variety of individuals and group including families, communities, staff and other community and government professionals.

· Ability to work as a collaborative member of a team to provide coordinated service to families.

Other:

· Clean criminal record

· Valid class 5 BC driver’s license with no restrictions, and positive driver’s abstract

· Willingness to accommodate a flexible work schedule to meet the needs of families/clients
