The City of Owen Sound is seeking a qualified Arena Operator to join the Community Services team on a full‑time, six‑month contract. Reporting to the Manager of Arena Operations, this position is responsible for the safe, efficient day‑to‑day operation of the City’s two arena facilities and other City‑owned facilities as required.
This role plays a critical part in ice maintenance, facility operations, refrigeration monitoring, staff oversight, and customer service while ensuring compliance with legislative requirements and City policies. This position is being posted due to a leave of absence.
Key Responsibilities:
Arena & Facility Operations
- Perform daily operation, monitoring, and maintenance of arena building systems.
- Open and close arena facilities, including activation and shutdown of facility operating systems.
- Conduct routine facility inspections and address or report deficiencies affecting safety or operations.
- Ensure orderly conduct of patrons and respond to incidents, complaints, or service requests in a qualified manner.
Ice & Refrigeration Operations
- Perform resurfacing, edging, flooding, and general maintenance of ice surfaces.
- Monitor refrigeration plant operations and record readings in operational logs.
- Identify and report issues with ice quality, refrigeration systems, or mechanical equipment to the supervisor.
Maintenance & Events
- Perform daily janitorial and maintenance duties, including dressing rooms, washrooms, change rooms, halls, public and viewing areas.
- Support set‑up and tear‑down for rentals, special events, and community functions.
- Assist with small capital projects, retrofits, and improvements with focus on accessibility, energy management, and facility longevity.
Equipment Operation
Operate and maintain a variety of equipment including but not limited to:
- Ice resurfacers, ice edgers
- Elevated work platforms, boom lifts, skid steers
- Pick‑up trucks, vans
- Carpentry and power tools
- Janitorial equipment, generators, pumps, and rented equipment as required
Qualifications:
- Education & Training:
- Secondary School Diploma (Grade 12) required.
- Arena‑related technical training or certification is preferred (e.g., refrigeration, ice maintenance, facility operations).
- Experience:
- Previous experience in facility maintenance, particularly in municipal or public settings, is an asset.
- Experience operating ice resurfacers (Zamboni and Olympia) is required.
- Certifications:
- Standard First Aid, CPR, WHMIS, Fire Extinguisher training (or willingness to obtain).
- Core Competencies:
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Independent work management with attention to detail
- Knowledge of facility operation regulations and compliance
- Valid Class “G” driver’s license
- Basic carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical skills (an asset)
- Proficient in time management and adaptable to varied tasks
- Operate equipment such as pick-up trucks, automatic floor scrubbers, carpentry tools, power tools, janitorial equipment, generators,
and pumps.
Salary Range: $31.49-$38.39 hourly
