Tasks and Responsibilities
Reporting to the Development Officer, the Varley-McKay Art Foundation of Markham is seeking a Summer Volunteer Supervisor to support the Varley Art Gallery of Markham’s programs and engagement activities. The Varley Art Gallery is striving to create a supportive, encouraging and engaging environment for the 60-80 volunteers who will choose the gallery for their volunteer experience. The Summer Volunteer Supervisor will be the main point of contact for our volunteers. They will mentor and engage youth in our community in ways that are significant, helping to build greater connections to the gallery.
Volunteer Recruitment and Training
- Coordinate the recruitment process, ensuring outreach efforts reflect the diversity of the City of Markham.
- Design and implement comprehensive training sessions for volunteers, focusing on their roles within summer camps, community events, and gallery programs.
- Develop onboarding materials, including role descriptions, schedules and expectations, ensuring clarity and alignment with the gallery’s objectives.
Supervision and Engagement
- Provide day-to-day supervision and mentorship for volunteers during gallery programs, summer camps, and community events.
- Act as the main point of contact for volunteers, addressing concerns, encouraging suggestions, and fostering professional development opportunities.
- Establish and oversee engagement initiatives such as a “Volunteer of the Week” program, mentorship pairings, and social events.
- Plan and execute an end-of-summer recognition event to celebrate volunteer contributions.
Program Development and Coordination
- Collaborate with summer camp staff to integrate volunteers into daily camp activities and ensure proper supervision.
- Schedule volunteers for community events,
such as the weekend drop-in art activities station, Canada Day, Markham Jazz Festival, and Labour Day activities.
Evaluation and Reporting
- Conduct weekly volunteer evaluations, providing timely feedback and support for their continued growth.
- Collect and analyze data on volunteer participation, engagement, and satisfaction to prepare detailed metrics and reports for internal review.
- Ensure all volunteer activities adhere to the gallery’s standards of care, consideration and confidentiality.

- Leadership and Team Building: ability to inspire and lead a diverse group of volunteers while fostering teamwork and collaboration.
- Communication: Strong oral, written, and interpersonal skills to engage with volunteers, staff, and the public effectively.
- Organization: Exceptional planning and scheduling skills to manage volunteer activities across multiple programs and events.
- Digital Proficiency: Familiarity with volunteer management tools such as Better Impact, and proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Conflict Resolution: Trained in handling challenges with diplomacy, ensuring positive outcomes.
- Cultural Sensitivity: Commitment to inclusivity, reflecting the multicultural community of Markham.
Requirements
- Experience and knowledge of visual arts, art history, arts administration or event management an asset
- Have good knowledge of, and keen interest in, visual art and museum practices
- Have a proven ability to communicate effectively in English (additional languages are not required, but are an asset)
- Be comfortable interacting with all members of the public
- Standard First Aid with CPR ‘C’
- Explicit and Valid Police Vulnerable Sector Check
To be eligible, candidates must
- Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment.
- Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refuge protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.
- Be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations.

Monday, June 22 – Friday, September 4, 2026 (11 weeks)

Work schedule
Weekdays (including Canada Day, and Civic Holiday), and occasional evenings.

This position is funded by Canada Summer Jobs.
The Summer Volunteer Supervisor will be based at the Varley Art Gallery of Markham and is expected to work on-site. Interactions with the public, volunteers, and program participants will occur daily. Occasional travel to off-site locations within York Region for events or outreach may be required. The role involves working on Canada Day, and the Civic Holiday (August long weekend), as well as occasional evening shifts to support gallery activities.
