Housing NWT provides access to adequate, suitable and affordable housing through the provision of housing programs and services based on need.

The Senior Facility Planner gives expert architectural advice to Housing NWT. They help lead the design of current projects, from modular pre-fabricated houses to stick-built multi-unit building developments. The Senior Facility Planner works closely with Housing NWT's design team, local communities, and outside consultants to make sure projects are creative, cost-effective, and support Housing NWT's goals.

Housing NWT manages about 2,900 homes in 32 communities across the Northwest Territories. These range from single-family houses to larger apartment-style buildings. The head office in Yellowknife supports five regional offices and 24 Local Housing Organizations (LHOs).

Housing NWT focuses on both environmental and financial sustainability. It aims to reduce fossil fuel use and build long-lasting, efficient housing that supports the well-being of NWT residents. It is especially committed to helping those most in need by providing protected, affordable housing. As part of its renewal efforts, Housing NWT is strengthening partnerships with Indigenous governments and communities to ensure new housing reflects local culture and meets community needs.

The Senior Facility Planner is based in Yellowknife and reports to the Manager of Capital Planning, Design Innovation, and Quality Assurance.



They are part of the Infrastructure Services team, which also includes the Director of Infrastructure Services and the Manager of Energy Planning and Projects. Together, this team plans and delivers a range of housing projects from renovations to new builds under a capital budget of $10-50 million per year.

The Planner supports projects through early-stage planning, feasibility studies, and reports that help define project goals and ensure long-term value. They must understand northern design, prioritize sustainability, incorporate Indigenous design perspectives, and have strong project management skills.

This role includes travel to remote communities, often in challenging weather conditions and by small aircraft or winter roads. The Planner also has authority to approve contracts up to $100,000 and oversee performance on contracts up to $200,000. They may act in place of the Manager when needed and must follow safety rules for themselves, their team, and any contractors involved in their work.

To be successful in this position, you would have a relevant bachelor's degree in architecture and five (5) years of relevant experiences, where at least one (1) year of experience is cold climate related. Or architecture diploma combined with seven (7) years of direct relevant experience.

Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.

Must be eligible for membership with NWT Association of Architects.
