Reporting to the VP, Reinsurance Portfolio Management, the Senior Treaty Underwriter is responsible for underwriting complex reinsurance treaty arrangements, managing key client relationships, and contributing to portfolio performance. The role focuses on assessing treaty and portfolio-level risk, structuring reinsurance solutions, and exercising underwriting authority to support profitable growth in alignment with the organization’s risk appetite and strategic objectives. Operating with a high degree of autonomy, the Senior Treaty Underwriter evaluates large and complex treaty submissions, determines appropriate coverage structures and pricing, and makes independent decisions to accept, modify, or decline risks based on comprehensive underwriting, actuarial, and market analysis. This position offers a hybrid work environment, with a primary corporate office in Cambridge and access to a satellite office in Toronto. The Role
As the successful candidate, you will: Independently underwrite complex recent and renewal treaty business, including nonstandard structures and multiline portfolios, recommending pricing, capacity, and terms aligned with risk appetite and underwriting standards. Build and maintain strong broker relationships to support profitable growth,
solution oriented underwriting, and a sustainable pipeline of target business. Analyze and negotiate treaty wordings to identify and mitigate coverage, aggregation, and exposure risks, ensuring contract clarity and alignment with intended coverage outcomes. Partner closely with Pricing & Modelling to align underwriting judgment with technical pricing, catastrophe, and accumulation analysis, ensuring a consistent and risk‑adjusted view of portfolio exposure and performance. Act as technical authority, providing expert guidance on complex underwriting decisions, contract interpretation, and portfolio implications. Monitor and analyze portfolio performance, identifying trends, emerging risks, and profitability drivers, and recommending strategic underwriting and portfolio actions. Your Skills and Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree required, with advanced insurance credentials (CIP or FCIP) and/or a relevant advanced degree. 8+ years of underwriting experience in the reinsurance industry, with a robust focus on property and casualty treaty business and technical underwriting. Demonstrated success managing a profitable underwriting portfolio, including strong broker and client management capabilities and deep market knowledge. Advanced technical underwriting expertise, with the ability to assess and balance contract wording, exposure, pricing adequacy, claims dynamics, and strategic objectives. Proven ability to solve complex,
non‑routine underwriting and portfolio issues, synthesizing inputs from actuarial, claims, broker submissions, risk appetite, and contract intent. Ability to exercise independent underwriting authority, escalating high‑severity, high‑ambiguity, or complex matters with explicit options analysis and well‑supported recommendations. Salary Range
The expected base salary range for this position is $115,000 - $140,000. The actual salary will be determined based on factors including but not limited to, market conditions, relevant experience, job related knowledge, skills, abilities, qualifications, and education. Employees may also have the opportunity to participate in incentive programs to earn additional compensation.
