Department of Earth, Energy and Environment in the Faculty of Science invites applications for 3 Summer Student - Research - EEE positions. This Full time Fixed Term position is for approximately four months (based on the length of grant funding) with the possibility of extension. The role is for undergraduate students in earth science, geoscience, or environmental science who are interested in a summer 2026 position to assist in water sampling for eDNA, chemicals, phosphorous, and other compounds. Test any changes in water from Indigenous science and knowledge. This work will involve week long trips to field sites, working in cold and hot weather, and lifting and carrying relatively heavy or difficult objects. Reports to Dr. Myrle Ballard, Associate Professor / Canada Research Chair.
Responsibilities
- Able to meet deadlines.
- Able to work with minimum supervision.
- Network with Indigenous peoples and communities.
- Water sampling for eDNA, chemicals, phosphorous, and other compounds.
- Test any changes in water from Indigenous science and knowledge.
- Understanding of surface groundwater interactions and flood impacted systems.
- Soil and prairie wetland sampling (including QA/QC).
- Prairie wetland sampling and QA/QC.
- Data collection and analysis.
- Spatial data collection, handling and mapping.
Qualifications
- Education: PhD student, MSc/MA student, undergraduate (Science or other).
- Minimum two years of experience in soil related field work - planning, sampling, Indigenous methodologies, interpreting observations.
- A valid government issued driver's licence and ability to travel long distances for field work in Alberta,
Saskatchewan and Manitoba; field work trips last 4-10 days with a small team in remote areas with limited services.
- Readiness to follow specific protocols of various First Nations communities and an eagerness to work with a dynamic and interdisciplinary team.
- Comfortable being on camera is an asset for storytelling purposes.
- Understanding of Indigenous culture and practices.
- Effective communication with Elders and Knowledge keepers.
- Attention to detail.
- First aid, OCAP, and boating certificates are highly valued.
