Job Overview

The Boiler Field Service Technician is responsible for the on‑site installation, inspection, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of boiler systems, including hot water boilers, burners, controls, pumps, valves, and related hydronic components. This role ensures boiler systems operate safely, efficiently, and in compliance with applicable codes, manufacturer specifications, and regulatory requirements.

The technician serves as the primary boiler technical representative in the field and is accountable for accurate diagnostics, proper combustion setup, burner tuning, control calibration, and safe operation of pressure vessels and fuel systems. Responsibilities include performing preventative maintenance, combustion analysis, safety testing, and system startups and shutdowns, as well as identifying performance or safety issues and recommending corrective actions.

Additional responsibilities include documenting all service activities, maintaining tools, test instruments, and service vehicles, adhering strictly to safety protocols and lockout/tagout procedures, and communicating clearly with customers regarding boiler condition, repairs, and operational recommendations. The Boiler Field Service Technician is ultimately responsible for minimizing system downtime, ensuring reliable heat and steam production, and upholding the company’s standards for safety, quality, and customer satisfaction.

Technical Expertise

Boiler Systems & Hydronics (Required)

- In‑depth understanding of hot water boiler operation
- Knowledge of hydronic systems, including pumps, expansion tanks, heat exchangers, and piping configurations
- Ability to identify and resolve flow, pressure, and temperature‑related issues

Combustion & Burner Systems (Required)

- Expertise in gas, oil, and dual‑fuel burners
- Ability to perform combustion analysis and burner tuning for optimal efficiency and emissions
- Understanding of fuel trains, gas valves,



regulators, safeties, and flame safeguard systems

Controls & Electrical Systems (Required)

- Proficiency with boiler control systems, including pressure/temperature controls, limit switches, and safety interlocks
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and wiring diagrams
- Experience troubleshooting low‑ and high‑voltage control circuits

Water Treatment & Chemistry (Required)

- Understanding of boiler water chemistry, blowdown procedures, and scale/corrosion prevention
- Ability to recognize water quality issues affecting boiler performance and longevity

Safety & Compliance (Required)

- Strong knowledge of boiler safety devices, including low‑water cutoffs, pressure relief valves, and flame safeties
- Familiarity with applicable codes and standards (ASME, NBIC, NFPA, local jurisdiction requirements)
- Experience with lockout/tagout, confined space, and hot work procedures
- Proficiency using combustion analyzers, multimeters, manometers, and pressure/temperature gauges
- Ability to systematically troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and control‑related failures

Diagnostics & Tools (Required)

Documentation & Reporting (Required)

- Ability to accurately document service work, inspections, combustion readings, and corrective actions




- Experience following manufacturer service procedures and maintenance schedules

Licensing & Certification Requirements – Boiler Field Service Technician (Required)

- State or Local Boiler Operator / Boiler Technician License
- EPA Section 608 Certification (where applicable)
- Valid Driver’s License with acceptable driving record

Preferred Certifications (Asset)

- Stationary Engineer License
- Journeyman/Master HVAC License
- Gas Fitter License
- Oil Burner Technician Certification
- ASME / NBIC Awareness Training
- OEM Boiler Manufacturer Certifications

Safety & Compliance Training (Asset)

- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30
- Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) Training
- Confined Space Entry Certification
- Hot Work Permit Training
- Combustion Safety & Flame Safeguard Training

Continuing Education (Required)

- Maintain required licenses through continuing education
- Participate in ongoing technical training to stay current with codes and equipment updates

Education & Experience

- BS/BA Degree in technical field or equivalent experience
- Minimum 7-10 years of experience in HVAC, hydronic heating and water heating products, with advanced knowledge of boilers
- Excellent writing, communication and organizational skills
- Attention to detail
- Robust interpersonal and teamwork skills
- Proficient computer skills using Excel, PowerPoint and Word
