Description
The Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary, invites applications for the position of Scientific Director, Libin Cardiovascular Institute. This is a key leadership position within the Cumming School of Medicine and Alberta Health Services. The successful candidate will be offered an appointment with Tenure at the Associate Professor or Professor level.
The Libin Cardiovascular Institute is a joint entity of Alberta Health Services and the University of Calgary. Members include physicians, clinicians and other health professionals, researchers and trainees working across multiple University of Calgary faculties and Alberta Health Services departments. The Institute integrates basic, translational, clinical, and population cardiovascular research with education, training, and patient care, and serves as a collaborative hub dedicated to improving cardiovascular health for individuals and communities.
The Scientific Director is responsible for realizing the Institute’s vision and mission in cardiovascular research, education, and clinical innovation. The Scientific Director will provide scientific and administrative leadership to fulfill the Institute’s strategic directions, attract and strengthen resources, and ensure the Institute’s vision is achieved. Communication and reporting to the Institute’s Strategic Advisory Board and to members about the Institute’s programs and performance will be an important aspect of the Scientific Director’s role. The ability to collaborate effectively with other Cumming School of Medicine leaders and University of Calgary faculties is essential. The Scientific Director will also manage financial resources supporting the core operations of the Institute.
Qualifications include a PhD and/or MD. Candidates must have a strong academic background with academic qualifications commensurate with an appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor. Candidates must also have demonstrated administrative or research leadership experience in an academic setting. The future Scientific Director must model and embrace the core values of the Libin Institute, which have been integral to its success: collegiality, disciplinary and methodological diversity, service, and commitment to excellence in research.
Academic duties will include contributions to research, education, and service. If the successful candidate wishes to practice clinically, eligibility for licensure in the Province of Alberta is required. The Directorship is expected to require a commitment of 0.5 FTE.
Applicants at the level of Associate Professor should have evidence of leading a research program as demonstrated by external peer‑reviewed national or international grant funding, national or international presentations, and peer-reviewed research publications that have influenced an area of research in their field. Applicants at the level of Professor should have evidence of leading a well‑established research program as demonstrated by sustained external peer‑reviewed national or international grant funding with evidence of collaboration, national or international presentations, and peer‑reviewed research publications that have established and influenced an area of research in their field.
