The Department of Community Health Sciences in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Associate. This Fixed Term Recurring Part-time position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The position will also center the work of an emerging network of Black nursing faculty members across Canada. The position will strengthen the national and international work of the research program. The position requires in person work in Calgary.

Reporting to the Principal Investigator. Recurring Part-time employees are hourly employees engaged to perform work on an irregular schedule.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

- Draft research grant proposals for national and international funding competitions (CIHR, SSHRC, Horizon Europe etc)
- Conduct background research, such as literature searches, critical appraisal and summary of literature and meta-analyses to support projects
- Design qualitative and mixed methods research studies, including recruitment and data collection materials
- Conduct interviews, data analysis, and data organization
- Coordinate networks including arranging meetings and strengthening governance structures
- Develop governance documents
- Coordinate, liaise with and engage with local, national and international stakeholders and networks
- Prepare research manuscripts to be submitted for publication and/or presentation
- Assist in the planning and execution of conferences, workshops, and other knowledge exchange activities
- Obtain ethics, operational and/or administrative approvals
- Employ resourceful, innovative, and creative problem solving
- Mentor students and research assistants on methodologies, especially qualitative methodologies
- Support various research projects by providing knowledge, skills, and on-the-job training to others
- Ensure that supervisor is kept informed of progress of activities and progress of work

Qualifications / Requirements:

- Master's or PhD degree in relevant field (PhD strongly preferred)
- 2-5 years of related research experience
- Previous experience in writing successful peer-reviewed grants
- History of published papers in scientific, peer reviewed journals
- Superb writing skills
- Strong knowledge of qualitative research methods




- In-depth knowledge of critical theoretical perspectives including intersectionality and critical race theory
- Experience working with Black and racialized communities and/or global health
- In-depth knowledge of critical social paradigm including critical race theory and intersectionality
- Established relationship with Black communities in Canada or globally
- Superb communication skills in working with national and international stakeholders
- Demonstrated communication, organization, innovation and interpersonal skills
- Strong organizational skills
- Ability to manage competing priorities during peak research and project deadlines (e.g., grant submission cycles, conference planning, and reporting periods)
- Flexible schedule of work required to accommodate community events and academic deadlines
- Advanced skills in Microsoft Office applications: Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
- Skills in graphic design (including with Canva, Adobe Creative suite or equivalent) is an asset
