Lead Assistant Coach - Women’s Hockey

About This Position

Cougars Athletics and Recreation supports internal and external stakeholders of the Mount Royal University community. We actively create, promote and sustain an environment in which our community is challenged and supported in pursuit of personal growth in the areas of Athletics and Recreation. Mount Royal University competes in Canada West (CW) and U SPORTS. Cougars student‑athletes have competed in interuniversity competition for over 75 years, with more than ten of these at the highest level of amateur post‑secondary available. Our coaching personnel and approximately 170 student‑athletes are dedicated to pursuing excellence both academically and athletically, as outlined in the goals of the strategic plan. Varsity Athletics is an area within the department of Cougars Athletics and Recreation (CAR). There are eight Cougars Varsity high‑performance programs competing in CW and U SPORTS. About The Role

Reporting to the Women’s Hockey Head Coach, the Assistant Coach is responsible for assisting with leading and developing an exciting and competitive high‑performance U SPORTS Women’s Hockey program that enhances the strategic vision of the University and supports the campus community. The ideal candidate is an up‑and‑coming leader who is committed to collaborating with the Head Coach to assist the program to national prominence and focused on student‑athlete wellbeing, recruitment and retention, community engagement, and development of their sport both locally and regionally.

This position will require significant travel as well as working flexible hours, including on weekends, holidays and evenings.

Responsibilities





- Assist with strategic planning, administration and monitoring of performance of the Women’s Hockey program.
- Practice planning, day‑to‑day team organization, team communication and instruction.
- Game preparation including scouting, video analysis and tactical planning.
- Assist in the organization of team travel.
- Assist with recruitment efforts and planning; talent identification, visit coordination, related administration including non‑discretionary budget items.
- Assist with student‑athlete development. This includes mentorship of individuals and supporting team dynamics, managing team rules and conduct, leadership development, commitment to safety, and supporting the overall well‑being of student athletes.
- Remain current with knowledge, trends and practices that are necessary to assist with building and maintaining a nationally competitive program and to promote an environment of growth.
- Assist with the planning and lead the implementation of fundraising and revenue‑generating activities that support the Women’s Hockey program.
- Adhere to all Secure Sport rules and regulations as set by U SPORTS, CW and MRU.
- Other duties as assigned by the Head Coach and Department leadership.

Qualifications

- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent is required
- Equivalent experience or a combination of education and experience will be considered.

- NCCP Level 2 coaching, working towards Level 3 certification or equivalent experience preferred.
- Minimum of 1–2 years of coaching experience in a high‑performance environment,



preferably at the College, University, Junior, or professional level.
- Provincial and/or national coaching experience, and experience working in an academic setting is a desirable asset.
- Previous playing experience at a high level is an asset.
- Satisfactory Criminal Records Check and Vulnerable Sector Screening is required.
- Ability to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends as needed.
- Comprehensive knowledge of strategies and techniques that support the teaching, coaching, and ultimate preparation of student‑athletes for practice and competition at the U SPORTS level.
- Strong organizational, administrative, and computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suite, and other video/analytics programs).
- Ability to exercise discretion, good judgment, solid decision‑making, and confidentiality of information within a Safe Sport environment.
- Strong interpersonal skills, creative‑thinking, and the ability to work in a team environment.

Salary

$56,747.00 – $71,765 per annum
