Position Overview

The Undergraduate Nursing Employee (UNE) position provides an opportunity for the nursing student to consolidate knowledge and skills towards competency in RN or RPN practice. The UNE is an unregulated member of the collaborative health care team who provides patient‑centered care under the supervision of an RN or RPN. Responsibilities include delivering safe nursing care tailored to their educational preparation and competency, seeking consultation when needed, and ensuring compliance with relevant regulations and policies. The UNE will not be employed in a practice setting during their clinical placement as a student.

Education Requirements

- Current enrollment in an approved nursing education program leading to registration as a Registered Nurse or Registered Psychiatric Nurse.
- Successful completion of the third year or enrollment in the third year with at least 450 hours of clinical practice.
- In addition to the 450 hours, a clinical placement in a medical/surgical or mental health setting is required; additional hours or courses may be needed for some patient care settings.

Certification & Licensure

- Registered student in accordance with the policies of the enrolling institution in an approved nursing program.

- Competencies in clinical nursing practice to provide secure, quality nursing care in a supervised assignment.
- Ability to work in a team, request guidance, and accept constructive feedback.
- Critical thinking, including clinical judgment, problem solving, and evaluation reflective of formal nursing education level.
- Clear, respectful communication with patients, families,



and health care team members.
- Attitude and behavior conveying respect and dignity for all persons.
- Ability to establish professional, safe, inclusive, and respectful relationships.
- Shared accountability in a just and trusting culture.
- Demonstrated competencies working with patients, families, staff, students, and volunteers.
- Compassionate, empathic, caring attitude.
- Basic use of technology; competency in computer, clinical electronic device use, and electronic documentation.
- Adherence to all applicable clinical documentation requirements.

Physical Requirements

Moderate to heavy physical demands.

Background Checks

Successful candidate must have a current satisfactory Criminal Records Check (including Vulnerable Sector Search), Child Abuse Registry Check, and Adult Abuse Registry Check. Checks are considered current if obtained no more than six (6) months prior to start date. The candidate is responsible for service charges.
