Instrumentation and Control Engineer

We are looking for an experienced Instrumentation and Control Engineer to join our Peterborough, Ontario site. The role reports to the Instrumentation & Controls Engineering Manager and focuses on the design, development, testing, and support of control systems and instrumentation for fuel handling systems, medical isotope systems, and other plant equipment.

Your Day to Day

- Prepare and verify elementary drawings, schematics, electrical assembly drawings, single line diagrams, equipment specifications, and technical documents in compliance with applicable codes and standards.
- Liaise with personnel from various customer groups (design, operations and maintenance) to gather site‑specific design information.
- Execute walk‑downs of equipment in the plant.
- Prepare and present technical data to internal and external customers.
- Ensure designs comply with company, technical, and regulatory standards.
- Participate in design reviews and customer review meetings, providing stakeholder and design input.
- Test execution/commissioning of complex equipment and systems.
- Review selection of components and equipment (e.g., motors, cables, relays, junction boxes).
- Adhere to on‑time/on‑budget criteria for project commitments and customer success.
- Support development and estimating of engineering proposals.
- Ensure designs support manufacturability and compliance with requirements.
- Lead by example, ensuring compliance with processes, industry codes, quality systems, policies, and contractual requirements.
- Present and report on status, issues/solutions, improvements, and resource needs as required.
- Provide overall Project Technical Leadership duties for projects as needed.
- Contribute to and lead process change through process enhancement and technology introduction.




- Build customer relationships and ensure market alignment; interact with external customers, subcontractors and cross‑functional teams.
- Take an active role in driving proposal development and review, including scope review and estimate preparation.
- Identify project risks proactively, analyze solutions, and communicate decisions to leadership.
- Provide technical direction and oversight of design activities.
- Ensure health and safety associated with all project activities.
- Travel may be required to meet clients and stakeholders.

Qualifications

- B.A.Sc. in Electrical/Instrumentation & Control/Automation or related discipline.
- Current PEO licence.
- Typically 10 years of design engineering experience in highly regulated, process‑based industries (Nuclear, Aerospace, Transportation, Oil & Gas, Mining).
- Typically 3 years of experience in design and development with proven success in a technical leadership role.
- Experience leading engineering projects and key design teams throughout EPC life cycles.
- Experience with project schedules, budgets, financial metrics, and other project‑management methodologies.
- Broad interdisciplinary experience: systems design, requirements development, interface design and testing.
- Experience writing design documentation, including:
- Assembly drawings
- Elementary/schematic drawings
- Connection wiring diagrams
- Component specifications
- Design requirements
- Commissioning requirements
- Test procedures

- Exposure to mechanical, software design, systems engineering and manufacturing teams.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Creative problem‑solving, analytical abilities, leadership skills, and teamwork.




- Flexible to work remotely on short‑term customer site assignments.

Desired Characteristics

- Experience with IBM DOORS.
- Experience in the CANDU Nuclear Industry.
- Familiarity with CSA Nuclear Codes and Standards.
- Strong communication, presentation, and technical writing skills.
- General understanding of Engineering Change Control concepts for the nuclear industry.
- Ability to interface with project team members, vendors and customers to ensure scope and requirements are understood.
- Ability to work independently and interface with cross‑functional teams.
- Knowledge of the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC) and compliance with its requirements.
- Project management and controls training or exposure.

Benefits and Salary

The base salary range in Ontario at the start of employment is expected to be between $85,000 and $126,000 per year. Total compensation may include an annual cash incentive and a full range of medical, retirement and other benefits.
