The vascular access therapy (VAT) nurse applies a specialized and expanded body of knowledge of vascular access and infusion therapy, providing care to patients with a variety of vascular access needs. Responsibilities include providing consultation on difficult IV access, assistance to staff in the delivery of vascular access therapy, insertion of peripheral and central venous access devices, and recommendations on device selection to meet complex patient needs. The VAT nurse has advanced skills such as implanted port access, and midline and PICC insertion. The VAT nurse shares expertise and contributes to corporate committees or activities related to clinical practices, education, research, or quality improvement initiatives, and will be required to provide leadership in this domain. The VAT nurse teaches, counsels, troubleshoots, and advises patients and their families with vascular access needs. The VAT nurse also coaches and supports staff and learners in being able to assess and problem solve basic vascular access issues, as well as provide recommendations in navigating complex VAT issues.
Qualifications
1. Current Certificate as a Registered Nurse with the College of Nurses of Ontario.

CVAA(C) certification preferred
3. Knowledge of evidence-informed clinical practices for vascular access and infusion therapy.
4. Demonstrates clinical competency and expertise in basic VAT skills such as device selection, peripheral IV insertion, and line care and maintenance.
5. Demonstrates clinical competency and expertise in advanced VAT skills such as device selection, insertion of midlines and peripherally-inserted central catheters (PICCs), implanted port access, thrombolysis, and infection prevention strategies.
6. Understanding of anatomy and physiology, and antiseptic principles related to VAT
7. Experience with pediatric populations is an asset.
8. Commitment to ongoing career development with demonstrated proof of continuing education.
9. Demonstrated ability to provide education to patients and health professionals regarding VAT, devices, and best practices, as well as mentor clinical staff and learners.
10. Ability to focus on corporate initiatives by participating in activities that champion best practices.
