Position Overview
We are seeking a Geotechnical Junior Field Technician with 1–2+ years of relevant experience in construction inspection and materials testing.
The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience in:
- Concrete field testing
- Compaction testing using a nuclear density gauge
This role involves field-based testing, inspection, and reporting on construction projects across the GTA.
Key Responsibilities
Field Testing & Inspection
- Perform compaction testing using a nuclear density gauge (ASTM D6938)
- Conduct fresh concrete testing, including slump, air content, temperature, and cylinder casting (CSA A23.2)
- Carry out field inspection of footing subgrades and general earthworks in accordance with project specifications
- Perform asphalt field testing (temperature and compaction), as required
- Report any non-conformance or site concerns to project managers in a timely manner
General Duties
- Visually classify soils and document field conditions
- Maintain accurate and detailed field reports and test records
- Communicate test results and site observations to project managers
- Coordinate with contractors and site personnel during testing activities
Health & Safety
- Comply with Sola’s Health and Safety Policy and all applicable provincial regulations
- Follow proper procedures for handling and operating nuclear density gauges
Qualifications
Education
- Diploma or degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or related field
Experience
- 1–2+ years of experience in materials testing and field inspection
- Practical experience in:
- Concrete testing (CSA standards)
- Nuclear density gauge operation
Skills
- Strong understanding of CSA, ASTM, and MTO testing standards (basic working knowledge)
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work independently in field environments
- Organized and detail-oriented
Other Requirements
- Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle
- Physically able to perform field work and lift equipment (~50 lbs)
- Eligibility to work in Canada
Preferred (Not Mandatory)
- CCIL certification (or working toward certification)
- Experience with asphalt or basic soil testing
