Halifax Regional Municipality is inviting applications for the casual position of Summer Canoe, Kayak and SUP Camp Leader at the St. Mary’s Boat Club.

The St. Mary’s Boat Club engages children, youth and families in paddling based experiential programs, youth leadership, and outdoor recreation. As part of the Parks and Recreation's Adventure Earth Centre, The St Mary’s Boat Club programs give children and youth safe access to water activities and the knowledge and experience to practice them safety. All of the St Mary’s Boat Club programs are carried out on The North West Arm in Halifax.

With our core values of community, learning, safety, sustainability, magic, and excellence as a foundation, we provide opportunities to reconnect with the natural world, to pursue a healthy and active lifestyle, explore on the water and develop paddling skills.

Successful applicants will be working on the water leading Canoe, Kayak or Stand Up Paddle Board (SUP) camps. Programs include camps for 6-9 year-olds, 10-12 year-olds and 13-15 year-olds.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Learn the principles of Earth Education, maintain the our core values, understand and uphold HRM policies and procedures
- Attend all required training sessions
- Lead on‑water and shoreline activities for canoe, kayak, and stand‑up paddleboard (SUP) camps
- Teach paddling techniques, water safety skills, and basic boating procedures in an age‑appropriate, engaging way.
- Confidently set up sites and deliver assigned programs to participants according to program manuals, content, and delivery methods.
- Perform regular equipment, dock, and water-condition checks to identify and address hazards.
- Participate in check ins and debriefs each day
- Establish and maintain group community standards, support other leaders by role modelling positive behaviours, and use appropriate techniques of behaviour guidance
- Organize, manage, clean and maintain equipment and supplies
- Ensure the safety and positive experience of participants, youth leaders and other staff at all times
- Organize and lead out trip programs and experiences




- Support youth leaders in their development by assisting Coordinators with goal setting, supervision and mentorship, support, feedback, and evaluations. Assist with the completion of evaluations for each youth leader at the completion of programs.
- Include youth leaders in meetings and debriefs
- Support persons with diverse needs and disabilities in programs (e.g. personal care, lifting procedures, adapting activities, developing individualized plans when needed, etc.)

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:

- Must have a first aid certification, valid through to August 31st 2026 or willing to obtain
- Must have experience leading either children or youth in an outdoor and/or environmental education or recreational setting
- Canoe, kayak or stand-up paddleboard instructor certification or willing to obtain (can be provided during training).

Considered an Asset:

- Canoeing, kayaking or stand-up paddleboard skills certification
- Class 5 driver’s licence
- Current Bronze Cross or National Lifeguard Service certification
- VHF Radio Certificate
- Pleasure Craft Operator Card
- Previous experience working day camps and/or overnight camps at the Adventure Earth Programs or St Mary’s Boat Club an asset
- Studies in Outdoor Recreation, Environmental Education or similar courses
- Understanding of Healthy Childhood Development

Conditions of Employment:

- Applicants must be willing to obtain WHMIS training
- Applicants must be available to attend all orientations/training sessions (training and orientation subject to change):
- Copies of certification must be submitted upon hiring
- Staff are responsible for arranging their own transportation to and from work sites
- Must be able to work indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions

Security Clearance Requirements: Applicants must complete screening through the Child Abuse Registry and a Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Check

Please note – Testing may be conducted as a component of the selection process to assess technical and job specific knowledge. Candidates, who are selected for testing, may be tested in a group setting, scheduled at the employer’s discretion.

WORK STATUS: Casual July 6th, 2026, up to August 21st, 2026,



plus training (virtual, e-learning and in person) March - July.

TRAINING DATES: Mandatory dates will be confirmed upon hiring

HOURS OF WORK: July/August work hours are Monday to Friday 8:30 am – 4:30 pm paid 40 hours per week

SALARY: Non-Union; $19.75 per hour (plus 4% vacation pay), paid out biweekly. Eligible for paid holidays (if you work 15 of the 30 calendar days before the holiday and your next scheduled shift after the holiday, per NS Labour Standards)

WORK LOCATION: St Mary’s Boat Club, 1641 Fairfield Rd, Halifax. Applicants will be responsible for their own transportation to and from Adventure Earth Centre locations
