Personal Support Worker - Etobicoke, Ontario - CAD$108.00/week
Description
Caregiver Opportunity – Etobicoke, Ontario Schedule: Tuesday & Thursday, 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM (2 hours/visit) Location: Etobicoke, ON
About the Client: This role supports an elderly male client living at home in Etobicoke with his spouse, who is his primary caregiver. The client has dementia that has progressed significantly over the past year, alongside Type 2 diabetes that is increasingly difficult to manage as his memory declines. He is a warm, intelligent man with a rich personal history — a former National Sales Manager, a sports enthusiast, and someone with a genuine sense of humour that still surfaces from time to time.
The client attends a day program on Thursdays and a recreational therapy session on Wednesdays, so the caregiver role fits around an existing weekly structure. He has recently recovered from a serious foot infection and is transitioning into new orthotics and footwear. Careful attention to how his shoes are worn — correct feet, tongue position, no tucked-back flap — is essential at every visit. This is a non-negotiable detail that requires attentiveness and the ability to follow specific instructions. The client walks independently but slowly, and requires steady supervision on stairs, inclines, and uneven terrain. He has never fallen but has lost some strength and balance over the past year. Due to his diabetes and tendency to forget he has eaten, accessible food in the home is managed carefully — caregivers must follow the family's guidance on this without exception. The spouse is present in the home and is highly involved.
She has had poor experiences with previous PSW support and is specifically looking for a caregiver who prioritizes engagement, stimulation, and genuine companionship — not task completion alone.
Responsibilities:
Companionship and cognitive engagement — this is the most significant part of the role; the client needs stimulating, enjoyable interaction including conversation about his interests (sports, history, nature, art, current events), light activities, and outings where possible Mobility support and encouragement — accompanying the client on short walks, supervising on uneven terrain, and encouraging light activity within his capabilities Footwear assistance — carefully checking and assisting with shoes at every visit per the family's specific instructions; attention to detail here is critical given the client's foot health history Meal preparation support — reheating meals, making simple foods (soup, salad, toast, sandwiches), and assisting at mealtimes as needed Medication reminders — reminding the client to take medications when visits align with meal or bedtime Personal care setup — laying out clothing, helping with the order of dressing, setting up the bathroom for shaving and teeth brushing; the goal is always to have the client do as much as possible himself Light tidying — minor cleanup during and after visits (e.g. rinsing the sink after shaving)
What We're Looking For: This is a higher-complexity match.
The family has had unsatisfying experiences with previous care and is specifically seeking someone who goes beyond task-based support. The ideal candidate will have:
Experience working with clients with dementia Awareness of Type 2 diabetes and the importance of following strict dietary guidelines in the home Genuine interest in companionship and engagement — not just personal care Patience, creativity, and the ability to encourage independence rather than doing things for the client Strong attention to detail, particularly around footwear and foot health monitoring Comfortable with a structured but flexible approach — the client moves slowly and tasks take longer than expected Physically present and attentive on walks and outings English fluency required Access to a vehicle is a strong asset — the client benefits greatly from short drives to nearby parks and outings
Schedule: Starting schedule: Tuesday & Thursday, 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM (2 hours/visit) Note: Tuesday visits follow the client's physiotherapy appointment, so the caregiver should expect him to have had some activity earlier in the day. Thursday is an evening visit aligned with the spouse's need for respite.
