Overview

Markham Wesley Centre (MWC) and Markham Peoples Community Church (MPCC) have been working in partnership for many years in faithfully serving our community. As MWC begins the process of hiring a Centre-in-Charge, MWC respectfully request that MPCC assist in identifying and recommending a suitable candidate for this position. The Centre-in-Charge will provide leadership and direction for MWC's services and programs, ensuring these services and programs effectively advance MWC's vision and mission as the outreach arm of MPCC.

Job Description

After serving the community for over a decade, Markham Wesley Centre is entering a new phase of growth and seeks to further develop community services for residents of Markham and the Greater Toronto Area. We are seeking a qualified, like-minded leader who shares the MWC's vision and mission, possesses a strong background in community service, demonstrates mature servant leadership, thinks strategically, and carries a missional heart to lead MWC into its next stage of flourishing.

Working collaboratively with the MWC Board of Directors (MWC Board) and Markham Peoples Community Church, the successful candidate will be responsible for prayerful discernment, strategic leadership, development, delivery, and long-term sustainability of the ministries and programs of MWC with excellence and integrity.

This position reports directly to the Senior Pastor of Markham Peoples Community Church and collaborates closely with the MWC Board in fulfilling its responsibilities.

Primary Responsibilities

Leadership

- Lead and disciple staff, volunteers, and internal stakeholders as a servant leader, fostering spiritual growth, personal development, and healthy team dynamics.
- Cultivate a Christ-centered spiritual culture within the team, volunteers, and the organization through prayer, spiritual disciplines, and faithful action.
- Build and nurture sustainable communities within MWC, marked by care, mutual support, and holistic well-being.
- Develop and sustain collaborative relationships with MPCC leadership, as well as existing and potential community and ministry partners.

Strategic Planning

- Develop, implement, and report on annual strategic goals,



clearly aligning MWC's strategic plan—particularly in Children, Youth, and Family Ministries—with MPCC's overall strategic direction.
- Provide relevant research and analysis on public policy developments, community demographics, social enterprise trends, and emerging community priorities to support informed strategic planning.
- Conduct community surveys and needs assessments to guide program development, marketing, and outreach.
- Plan, develop, implement, and monitor sustainability strategies to strengthen program funding and operational viability.

Communications & Partnerships

- Develop and implement an advocacy and communications plan to promote MWC programs and outcomes to internal and external stakeholders.
- Communicate effectively, responsibly, and in a timely manner with MPCC, community partners, and the broader public to enhance visibility and understanding of MWC's mission, goals, and impact.
- Establish and maintain positive working relationships with the MWC Board, staff, ministry leaders, and volunteers.
- Liaise with and report to the MWC Board to ensure effective execution of strategic decisions
- Represent MWC at fundraising initiatives, public and media events, community meetings, agency and funder events, and local coalitions or task forces.

Management & Operations

- Develop, manage, and monitor program budgets to meet fiscal objectives and ensure responsible stewardship.
- Foster and maintain a healthy organizational culture aligned with MWC's core values.
- Pioneer the planning, launch, and operation of new ministries and initiatives as appropriate.
- Monitor and evaluate program effectiveness and participation; collect and analyze data for reporting, decision-making, and funding applications.
- Ensure all programs, staff, and volunteers comply with applicable legislation and standards (including WSIB, health and safety, Human Rights, Employment Standards, and all relevant government regulations), as well as MWC policies and quality standards.
- Investigate and resolve complaints or inquiries promptly; report inappropriate or criminal activity to appropriate authorities immediately.
- Coach, lead, develop, and supervise staff and volunteers to maintain and enhance the quality of services and programming.
- Perform other duties as assigned.





Education, Experience, Skills, and Personal Characteristics

Education

- Master's degree in theological studies or a related field preferred, with cross-disciplinary training in education, community programming, social work, or related areas.

Experience

- Demonstrated ability to integrate Christian faith and theology personally and within a community-based social impact context.
- Minimum of five years of proven experience delivering community programming, particularly serving children, youth, and families.
- Experience in frontline service and supervisory roles with diverse populations.
- Experience in not-for-profit and/or faith-based settings preferred.

Skills and Abilities

- Strong consensus-building skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse partners to achieve measurable outcomes.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, conflict-management, and organizational skills.
- Proven leadership capacity to develop vision and design and manage program development processes.
- Solid interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage individuals from diverse ethnic, cultural, educational, socioeconomic, and religious backgrounds.
- Demonstrated experience in research, planning, and implementation of community-based initiatives.
- Familiarity with the local community and its social needs and challenges.
- Excellent management and supervisory skills in a multi-staff and volunteer environment.
- Agreement with and adherence to the constitution of Markham Peoples Community Church.
- Valid Ontario Driver's License, access to a personal vehicle for work-related travel, and availability to work some evenings and weekends.
- Strong written and verbal English communication skills, including public speaking at events, meetings, church services, donor gatherings, and media or social media settings.
- Ability to meet administrative deadlines, manage multiple priorities, and work both independently and collaboratively.
