Family Support Worker / Respite Caregiver – Private Family

We are looking for a highly dependable, mature and capable Family Support Worker / Respite Caregiver to provide care and household support for three teenagers in our home in Thorndale, Ontario.

This is not a traditional babysitting position. The role is best suited to someone who is confident taking responsibility, comfortable working independently, and able to step into the day-to-day running of a household when I am travelling.

The primary need is for occasional overnight, weekend and multi-day coverage, with the potential for additional part-time hours depending on availability and fit.

Responsibilities

When I am away, you will essentially step into my role and keep the household running smoothly.

Responsibilities include:

- Providing care, supervision and support for three teenagers
- Supporting one teenager who is autistic and non-verbal
- Following established routines and providing calm, consistent support
- Administering prescribed medications accurately and according to written instructions
- Preparing meals, snacks and school lunches
- Grocery shopping or picking up household necessities as required
- Light household management, tidying and keeping the home organized
- Transporting the children to scheduled activities, appointments and therapy
- Driving to therapy appointments
- Driving to soccer practices, games and other scheduled activities
- Helping ensure school, therapy, sports and household schedules are followed
- Communicating with me regarding anything important that arises while I am away




- Managing normal day-to-day situations independently and using good judgement
- Ensuring the home, children and pets are safe and well cared for during my absence

The ideal candidate

The ideal candidate will be:

- Mature, dependable and trustworthy
- Calm, confident and organized
- Comfortable caring for teenagers
- Comfortable supporting a young person with autism and developmental needs
- Able to follow medication instructions precisely
- Comfortable preparing basic family meals
- Able to manage a household independently
- A confident and safe driver
- Flexible enough to provide occasional evening, overnight, weekend and multi-day care
- Interested in developing an ongoing, long-term relationship with our family

Experience in any of the following would be considered an asset:

- Developmental Services Worker (DSW)
- Educational Assistant (EA)
- Personal Support Worker (PSW)
- Respite care
- Autism support
- Special education
- Child and youth care
- Nursing or healthcare
- Professional nanny or household management

Formal training is valuable, but reliability, judgement, maturity and the right personality fit are equally key.

Location

The position is based in Thorndale, Ontario, just outside London.





Applicants from surrounding communities are welcome, including London, Thorndale, Thamesford, Ingersoll, Woodstock, St. Marys, Stratford and surrounding areas.

Applicants must have a valid Ontario driver’s licence and reliable transportation.

Screening requirements

Because this position involves responsibility for children and a vulnerable young person, successful candidates will be required to provide:

- A current Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check
- The criminal record and vulnerable sector documentation will be reviewed and validated
- Three references, which will be contacted and verified
- A valid Ontario driver’s licence
- Proof of appropriate automobile insurance if a personal vehicle will be used to transport the children

These requirements are mandatory.

Schedule

The schedule will vary depending on family needs and travel.

Coverage may include:

- Occasional evenings
- Overnight care
- Weekends
- Multi-day stays
- Extended travel coverage

Travel dates will normally be arranged in advance whenever possible.

Compensation

Regular scheduled care will be compensated at an hourly rate based on experience and qualifications.

For overnight, multi-day and extended travel coverage, flat daily or weekly rates may be negotiated in advance based on the length of the assignment, responsibilities required and overall care needs.

All compensation arrangements will be agreed upon before each extended assignment.

Pay: $24.00-$28.00 per hour
