Freelance Back-End Engineer

Duration: Short-Term Project

Start Date: November 16, 2026

Employment Type: Freelance

Looking for a Toronto-based consultant with a US bank account.

Position Overview

We are seeking a freelance Back-End Engineer to support a lead engineer on a short-term client engagement focused on enhancing an existing website's backend architecture and implementing AI-powered content tagging capabilities.

The project involves modifying the existing sitemap structure and developing an automated tagging solution within a headless CMS. The solution will leverage AI to analyze website content and generate recommended tags, helping improve content organization, mapping, and discoverability.

This role is ideal for a hands-on backend developer who can work alongside an established lead engineer, assist with day-to-day development tasks, support integrations, and contribute to the implementation and testing of current functionality.

Key Responsibilities

- Provide hands-on backend development support to the lead engineer.
- Assist with modifying and extending existing sitemap architecture.
- Support the development of AI-powered content tagging and automation workflows.
- Build and integrate REST and GraphQL APIs.
- Assist with webhook integrations and event-driven workflows.
- Support prompt engineering and schema design for AI-generated content recommendations.
- Work within a headless CMS environment to support content management and tagging functionality.
- Assist with debugging, testing, and validating integrations.
- Support CI/CD pipelines and deployment processes.
- Collaborate with frontend engineers on API integrations and technical requirements.

- Contribute to code reviews and technical documentation.

Required Skills & Experience

Backend Development

- Strong experience with TypeScript and Node.js.
- Experience building and integrating REST and GraphQL APIs.
- Familiarity with serverless functions and edge functions.

AI & Automation

- Experience integrating AI capabilities into applications or existing workflows.
- Understanding of prompt engineering and structured schema design.
- Python experience is a plus.

Integrations & Infrastructure

- Experience working with webhooks and event-driven pipelines.
- Understanding of queues, retries, and idempotency.
- Familiarity with secrets management and cloud hosting environments.
- Experience with Vercel is preferred.
- Understanding of application monitoring, logging, tracing, and alerting.

CMS & Development Practices

- Experience with headless CMS platforms; Kontent.ai experience is a plus.
- Familiarity with server-side rendering (SSR).
- Experience with unit, integration, and contract testing.
- Understanding of CI/CD pipelines and deployment workflows.
- Knowledge of OWASP and application security fundamentals.
- Strong documentation and code collaboration skills.

Ideal Candidate
- Hands-on backend developer with strong TypeScript and Node.js experience.
- Has experience integrating AI tools and automation into existing applications.
- Familiar with headless CMS platforms, content workflows, and API integrations.
- Comfortable working in a supporting capacity alongside a lead engineer rather than owning the overall architecture.
- Able to jump into an existing codebase, pick up tasks quickly, and contribute to implementation.
- Available to start November 16 and commit to the full project duration.
