The opportunity
Applied Brain Research (ABR) builds the most efficient AI models running on edge devices. Our State Space Model architecture delivers competitive accuracy at a fraction of the compute, memory, and power of Transformer-based alternatives, and our speech models run in real time on constrained silicon that no cloud-scale model can reach.
Customers license that technology as embedded software, and every license depends on infrastructure most companies never see: the systems that deliver software releases securely, control who has access to what, and deliver to customers a reliable and trust-building experience. We are building that infrastructure and are looking to hire someone who can make it a source of true value for our customers.
You will be ABR's first operations hire and the primary builder of our customer-facing delivery infrastructure. Parts of it exist today, including our developer portal and documentation portal. Your mandate is to take ownership of what exists, build the production-grade customer portal and secure distribution that do not yet exist, and scale the whole into a system a customer's manufacturing line can depend on, without regression for the customers we serve today.
You will build hands-on, run it in production, and work collaboratively with engineering and sales. AI coding agents are part of how we work here; you will direct their output and own what ships.
What you’ll do in the first twelve months
- Take ownership of ABR's existing developer and documentation portals and extend them into our production delivery infrastructure, live for evaluation customers in your first quarter.
- Deliver an operational customer portal supporting a scaling production customer base: monitoring, incident response, audit trails,
and recovery for our delivery infrastructure.
- Establish the security and compliance posture that enterprise and regulated buyers expect, and be the person in the room when their auditors ask how our operations work and how we protect their assets.
- Run customer operations end to end: onboarding, account provisioning, access management, asset delivery, and support triage in partnership with the sales team.
- Define the operations function: the processes, runbooks, and tooling that will carry it as the customer base grows.
- Apply spare cycles where they create the most value, from customer-facing demonstrations of our models to our developer-facing web properties.
What we’re looking for
We are looking for an engineer who has personally built and operated production systems and wants to own one outright. Specifically:
- The instincts to build in step with the engineers whose software you deliver, integrating with our engineering team, sales, and existing systems.
- Eight or more years of software engineering experience spanning web applications, backend services, and cloud infrastructure.
- A track record of designing, building, and operating production customer-facing systems end to end, as the person answering when they broke.
- Depth in the disciplines this platform lives on: identity and access management, public key infrastructure and content integrity, secure software distribution, and deploying and operating production services on managed cloud platforms.
- Working fluency with security and privacy compliance (for example SOC 2, ISO/IEC 27001, GDPR) and how to produce evidence for an enterprise audit.
- Experience with software licensing, entitlement, or DRM systems (a strong plus).
- Fluency with AI-assisted development, whether you have already made coding agents productive under real review discipline or intend to define how that is done.
- Comfort building where little exists, with a record of taking systems from early foundations to production grade.
- Bachelor's degree in engineering or computer science.
Few candidates will arrive with every item on this list. If you meet most of it and intend to grow into the rest, we want to hear from you.
This role is probably not for you if
- You want to architect the system and hand the operation of it to someone else.
- You need an established platform team, existing runbooks, or a change board to be effective.
- You measure seniority by the size of the team you inherit rather than the function you build.
What we offer
- A senior seat owning an entire function, with the mandate to build it your way and the accountability that comes with it.
- Base salary with meaningful equity participation.
- Hybrid remote/in office work structure in Waterloo, Ontario.
About Applied Brain Research
ABR was founded on the belief that AI reaches its full potential only when it runs where the data lives, at the edge. Our patented State Space Model architecture underpins a family of speech models that run in real time on the constrained silicon inside devices from AR glasses to warehouse robots, with an on-device language roadmap building on that foundation. Our customers license our models; our silicon and system partners build reference designs around them.
