Build Tempo’s backend platform through technical ownership, query expertise, and strong software craftsmanship in a fully remote environment. Shape systems used across Grafana.

This Senior Engineer role focuses on major Tempo components and significant technical projects. You will improve ingestion, storage, query execution, metrics generation, and APIs while documenting decisions through design reviews. Partner with Product, App Observability, Asserts, Drilldown, and Grafana Assistant teams to understand consumption and unblock delivery across the platform.

Key Responsibilities:

- Own major components across Tempo’s backend architecture
- Improve query pipelines, performance, and analytical data workflows
- Design structured, deterministic, discoverable APIs




- Present design documents and make sound technical trade-offs
- Collaborate with Product and sibling engineering teams

Requirements:

- Strong software craftsmanship and maintainable production code
- Experience with query languages, engines, or programmatic APIs
- Experience with columnar or analytical storage formats
- Experience building and operating distributed production systems
- Transparent writing and collaboration in remote teams
