Summary
Come help shape a more compassionate future for people navigating pregnancy and substance use.Concurrent pregnancy and substance use can present complex healthcare needs, making compassionate, coordinated and evidence-based care more important than ever. As PHC continues expanding and improving the supports available for pregnant and parenting people using substances, the Urban Health & Substance Use Program is hiring a temporary part-time 0.6 FTE Perinatal Substance Use Clinical Nurse Educator to join Road to Recovery (R2R).
In this unique role, you'll help strengthen the knowledge, skills and confidence of nursing teams across St. Paul's Hospital through clinical education, mentorship, guidance and hands‑on bedside support. From supporting substance use nurses in addressing pregnancy‑related care needs to helping maternity teams build their knowledge and confidence in substance use care, you'll bridge clinical knowledge across care settings and help ensure patients receive high‑quality, person‑centred, trauma‑informed and culturally safe care. This is an opportunity to bring your clinical expertise to an evolving area of practice and make a meaningful impact on how perinatal substance use care is delivered at PHC.
What is R2R?
Launched in 2023,
R2R is an innovative initiative focused on ensuring people who use substances have access to the right support at the right time, free from stigma. R2R supports clients at every phase of their wellness and recovery journey by coordinating seamless care, even when there are setbacks or relapses along the way.
The R2R continuum of services in operation today includes 25 detox beds located at St. Paul's Hospital, 20 transitional care beds for clients awaiting space in a treatment program or long‑term housing, and an Aftercare Team providing support as clients transition back into the community. The initiative is rolling out in steps, with additional treatment services to come soon, including a ~50 bed off‑site treatment center.
What you will be doing:
- Developing and delivering tailored clinical education: Assessing the learning needs of nursing teams across different clinical settings and developing, implementing and evaluating educational programs and resources, including supporting staff with pregnancy‑related care and strengthening their knowledge of substance use and perinatal substance use care.
- Providing hands‑on clinical guidance and mentorship: Acting as a visible, accessible clinical resource to nursing staff and interdisciplinary colleagues, offering bedside support, clinical consultation, coaching and guidance in complex situations to strengthen confidence and evidence‑based practice.
- Bridging knowledge and strengthening collaborative care: Working alongside nursing leadership, physicians and interdisciplinary teams across St. Paul's Hospital to improve coordination, share clinical expertise and promote consistent, person‑centred, trauma‑informed, culturally safe and non‑stigmatizing approaches to care.
- Advancing clinical practice and quality improvement: Identifying opportunities to strengthen nursing practice, integrating current research and evidence into education and clinical resources, and contributing to quality improvement initiatives that enhance care experiences and outcomes for pregnant and parenting individuals affected by substance use.
