Upgrader Operator: Bitumen Processing Duties and Wages
What Does an Upgrader Operator Do in the Oil Sands?
An upgrader operator runs gear that turns thick oil from the oil sands into lighter streams. They check the unit and take samples. Some crews work on a unit that breaks up heavy oil. Others help take sulphur out of it before it goes to the next step.
How Upgrader Operators Track Bitumen and Product Quality
An upgrader can make a lighter crude oil that a refinery can use. Units can use heat or hydrogen to change the oil or treat it. Some parts of the site handle hydrogen sulphide , which needs site training. An extraction operator helps separate oil from mined sand, while a SAGD operator works with wells and steam.
Upgrader Operator Wages and Job Outlook
Job Bank lists CAD 32.00 to 72.12 per hour in Alberta for oil, gas and chemical process operators in 2023–2024. In May 2025, the middle 80% of U.S. refinery operators, petroleum pump operators and gaugers earned USD 27.46 to 55.71 per hour. These figures cover wider job groups.
Canada projects about 4,100 openings in its group from 2026 to 2035. About 3,200 could come from retirements. The U.S. figure is for a broad refinery and petroleum operations group. Ask about site premiums and travel.
Upgrader Operator Training for Oil Sands Work
A recent worker may learn one unit with an operator. A site such as Suncor Base Plant has several kinds of units. Check which one the job covers and whether it asks for a power engineering ticket or other plant training.
Challenges of Oil Sands Work for Upgrader Operators
Work can mean night shifts and outdoor checks in cold weather. When a unit shuts down, other crews may need to wait for it or change what they do next.
Perks of Oil Sands Work for Upgrader Operators
You learn how thick oil moves through several steps before it can be shipped. That can help you move into another unit, the board or training.
