Field Service Heavy Duty Equipment Technician

Location: Petrolia, ON
Pay: $38–$50/hour + $2/hour field premium
Schedule: Field Service | Extensive Travel Required

The Job

If you like turning wrenches, chasing down mechanical problems and aren't interested in spending every day in the same shop, this could be right up your alley.

We're looking for a Heavy Duty Mechanic to handle field service work on rail maintenance equipment, heavy machinery, trucks, trailers and support equipment. You'll be based out of Petrolia, but most of your work will be out in the field, supporting rail crews and keeping equipment running on projects across Ontario and occasionally as far as New Brunswick.

This isn't your typical oilfield or fleet mechanic job. You'll work on a variety of equipment, travel to some pretty remote locations and get a look at parts of the country most people never see.

Some trips can run up to two weeks at a time, followed by a few days back home. When equipment breaks down, you'll be the one heading out to get it sorted and get the crew back to work.

What You'll Be Working On

- Troubleshooting and repairing diesel-powered heavy equipment, rail maintenance machinery, trucks and trailers.
- Handling field breakdowns, mechanical repairs and preventative maintenance at job sites.
- Diagnosing issues with engines, hydraulics, drivetrains and other mechanical systems.
- Performing inspections, servicing equipment and catching problems before they turn into bigger repairs.
- Working alongside equipment operators and field crews to keep machinery safe and operational.
- Keeping service records and maintenance logs up to date.




- Looking after your tools and keeping equipment and work areas in good shape.

What We're Looking For

- Hands-on Heavy Duty Mechanic experience with off-road equipment, heavy machinery, trucks or similar equipment.
- Journeyperson ticket is an asset, but not a dealbreaker. Experienced apprentices with solid mechanical skills are welcome.
- Experience with construction, forestry, logging, industrial or heavy equipment is a positive fit.
- Strong troubleshooting skills. You can diagnose a problem, get your hands dirty and figure out what needs fixing.
- Comfortable working independently and in the field.
- Willing to travel extensively throughout Ontario and occasionally into other provinces, potentially as far as New Brunswick.
- Comfortable with extended trips away from home, longer workdays and occasional night shifts.
- Own tools required.

Schedule & Travel

This is a travel-heavy position, so you need to be comfortable spending time on the road.





- Typically 10-hour shifts, 6 days on and 1 day off while on assignment.
- Mostly day shifts, with some nights depending on the job.
- Trips can run up to two weeks at a time, generally followed by a few days at home.
- Most travel is throughout Ontario, with occasional trips farther east.
- When you're not on the road, you'll be back at the Petrolia shop working on equipment and getting it ready for the next job.
