About Alberta Association of Midwives
Since 1986, the Alberta Association of Midwives (AAM) has been the professional body that serves a passionate community of midwives and the midwifery profession in Alberta. As primary health care providers, registered midwives deliver high quality, safe, and cost-effective care during pregnancy, labor, birth, and 6-weeks postpartum. People feel empowered when they partner with a midwife and a greater sense of control and ownership of their health, their pregnancy, and the outcomes of their pregnancy.
The Canadian midwifery model of care is based on four core principles: continuity of care, informed choice, evidence-based practices, and choice of birth setting. Alberta midwives practice in a sustainable way by delivering midwifery services that aligns with this model. Today there are approximately 200 Registered Midwives in Alberta attending almost 15% of births each year.
