Wyvern

Edmonton

Wyvern is making something big . Our vision is to provide actionable intelligence from space, anywhere in the solar system. To achieve this, we need to reimagine how satellite Earth observation is done entirely.

We’re a rapidly growing space company in Western Canada, powered by humans who are passionate about space and are redesigning the satellite to enable a sustainable future for humanity. Wyvern has been through Y Combinator's Winter 2022 batch and has raised > USD$40M in pre-seed, seed, and non-dilutive funding. If you’re excited about creating a better earth from space, we want you on our team.

WHAT WE’RE WORKING ON

Wyvern is developing telescopes to capture better hyperspectral imagery from space. Hyperspectral images contain more colours than other types of imagery, meaning these images capture the spectral signature of your crop or forest, for example.

With hyperspectral imagery, however, it’s hard to get quality images with a high signal-to-noise ratio and resolution. To mitigate this, and as part of our long-term vision, we’re designing telescopes that are compact on launch and deploy in space, meaning we pack better performance in a smaller, cheaper-to-launch package. In the meantime, we have a constellation of satellites – nicknamed Dragonette – that are delivering the highest-resolution commercial hyperspectral images on the market to our customers.

We’re looking for a motivated and passionate individual to join our mechanical engineering team for a 4-8 month work term. As part of an R&D; project, you’ll assemble and complete tests of a micropositioning system in flight-like operating modes and environments. These tests include system characterization, motion control, and thermal setting testing.

WHO YOU ARE

- You must be currently enrolled in a graduate or undergraduate engineering program at an accredited Canadian university.

- You must be located or willing to relocate to Edmonton, AB for the duration of your internship to work hands-on with our hardware.

- You can explain technical concepts about your work to non-technical people and keep them engaged as you explain.

- You write motion control or data acquisition software. At minimum, you are familiar with common engineering programming languages like Python or MATLAB.

- You have experience utilizing and interfacing with electronic hardware (microcontrollers, computers, DAQs, etc.) to monitor and control instruments.

- You design, build, and operate robotics or motion control systems.

- You enjoy being challenged and constantly learning.

- You are actively involved in extracurricular team projects that challenge technical skills (ex. hackathons, robotics club, etc.).

- You independently solve engineering problems and have a solid critical thinking process, but know when to ask for support.

- Only Canadian Residents or current Canadian Work Permit holders will be considered for this position.

In addition:

- You may be familiar with hardware for space, vacuum, or similar harsh environments as well as environmental testing (e.g. vibration testing, TVAC).

- You may have experience working in clean rooms or with electrostatically sensitive hardware.

- You may have worked with CAD, preferably SolidWorks, and prototyping tools like 3D printers and manual mills.

Mechatronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, and Engineering Physics students are preferred, but students in other programs (Physics, or other Engineering programs) will still be considered if experience is aligned with this role.

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING

As a Space Technology Testing Intern, you will apply your knowledge across many areas, including:

- Work hands-on to assemble and integrate a novel space mechatronic system.

- Design, prototype, and integrate test support equipment.

- Set up and conduct tests on the micropositioning system

- Use Python to automate tests, collect data, and process results.

- Use creativity and troubleshooting skills to build and validate measurement systems.

- Trial feedback control methods to achieve the desired motion control performance.

- Write test procedures and technical reports.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM WYVERN

- A fun and driven culture with the flexibility of a startup, including flexible hours, some hybrid work, and support across a flat organizational structure.

- Mentorship from a team of electrical, mechanical, software, and systems engineers.

- We’re small but ambitious. The systems you work on are foundational to Wyvern’s success, and you will get the unique opportunity to grow with the company.

- This is a 4- 8 month position beginning in January 2027; the exact start date is TBD.

- Compensation will be around $25-30 CAD/hour, depending on qualifications.
