This Senior Staff Engineer role combines platform engineering with responsible AI adoption across a highly complex tax domain. You will build systems for setup, calculation, payments, filings, and communications while helping engineers use AI effectively. The position requires explicit technical communication, informed tradeoffs, and collaboration across teams.
Key Responsibilities: Build maintainable, structured, and well-documented platform code
Enable safe agentic AI interaction with tax concepts
Lead scalable solutions for complex and ambiguous problems




Mentor engineers on effective AI usage and strategy
Improve foundational architecture, reliability, and team effectiveness
Requirements: At least 10+ years of engineering experience
Experience with multiple general-purpose programming languages
Experience building and testing large-scale production systems
Understanding of current AI tools and their limitations
Bonus experience with Ruby on Rails, TypeScript, and React
Use AI fluency, system architecture, and reliability expertise to strengthen Gusto’s tax compliance technology.
