Student healthcare externs support patients through compassionate care, clinical assessments, and teamwork at Charlton Campus in Hamilton.
St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton offers a six-month, part time contract in Complex Care 5 and 8 Tower. Under direct or indirect supervision, externs assist with daily care, comfort, mobility, skin integrity, and social engagement. The unit serves patients requiring complex continuing or alternate-level care.
Key Responsibilities: Provide assistance with daily living activities under supervision
Answer call bells and participate in comfort rounds
Complete falls risk, pain, Braden, and CAM assessments
Contribute to existing care plan interventions
Report findings and safety concerns to supervising nurses
Requirements: RN students must be enrolled in years two through four
RPN students must be in their final study year
Occupational therapy and physiotherapy students may apply
Demonstrate critical thinking, organization, and time management skills
Communicate professionally with patients, families, and healthcare teams
Develop supervised patient-care experience while supporting independence, functioning, dignity, and quality of life in complex care.
