Hummingbird Drones is a BC-based tech company that's been helping detect and fight wildfires since 2015. We build tools that make a real-world impact - and we care deeply about doing it well. Our team is tight-knit, talented, and always pushing to do better.
As a Full Stack Developer at Hummingbird, you'll be at the heart of shaping our software, Nova. Reporting to our CEO + Lead Dev, you'll work within our development team to continuously evolve our product. Your contributions will help position Nova as the go-to SaaS platform for public safety, delivering real-world impact to teams on the frontlines, worldwide.
Candidates must be based in Victoria, BC, to work closely with our in-office team in our vibrant downtown office, where collaboration and hands-on learning are at the heart of our dynamic work environment.
Compensation:
The base salary for this role is $90,000 - $120,000 CAD, based on experience. We offer dental and extended health benefits, flexible paid time + extra time off during the holidays, and the option to receive equity after completing probation.
What you'll work on in your first year:
Our roadmap evolves as we learn from customers, so we can’t promise exact projects, but here’s roughly how your first year will unfold:
In your first 3 weeks
- Set up your environment and get familiar with our codebase, tools, and deployment process
- Ship your first small fixes and improvements to production, with a teammate to guide you
- Meet the people you’ll work with across engineering, product, and design
In your first 3 months
- Take on your first features from idea to production, working closely with product and design
- Join code reviews and technical discussions, and start bringing your own perspective to them
- Help investigate and resolve issues in production, learning how our systems behave in the real world
By the end of your first year
- Own an area of the product or lead a larger piece of work
- Help shape decisions about architecture, tooling, and how we build
- Contribute to improving performance, reliability, and code quality across the codebase
- Support newer teammates as they get up to speed
Required Skills:
- 2+ years building production web apps in TypeScript and React
- Built or maintained server-side code or an API that real users depend on
- Writing tests as part of shipping (we use Jest and React Testing Library)
- Working in a shared codebase with code review and frequent deploys
- Explaining technical trade-offs clearly to people who aren't developers
Bonus Points for having:
- Experience with AWS and DynamoDB
- Experience with state management using Redux
- Consumed the Mapbox API to build mapping tools
- Experience building offline-first apps
- A background understanding of GIS from taking analytical and/or quantitative courses in remote sensing, image processing, spatial statistics or spatial data analysis
Probably not a fit if:
- You want a large team with dedicated QA and DevOps. You will be responsible for building features end-to-end.
- You'd rather work fully remote
We think this is a pretty special place to work. Here's why:
- You'll be part of a mission-driven company doing work that genuinely saves lives - not just moving metrics
- You'll build in person, side-by-side with a tight-knit team in our Victoria office, where ideas move fast, and collaboration happens face-to-face
- Flexible schedule - we care about outcomes, not hours
- You'll have real autonomy and ownership over your work, with a leadership team that trusts you and gets out of your way
- You'll have creative freedom and the mentorship to grow your skills - this role has a real growth path
- You'll work with a talented, driven team that's genuinely excited about what they're building
- Regular team meet-ups and events - we work hard together and celebrate together too
- There are dogs in the office. They are really, really good dogs.
How to Apply:
Submit your resume to
[email protected] and include links to your GitHub projects or any other examples of your work. In your email, please answer this question:
In 3 to 5 sentences, tell us about a bug you tracked down in production. What was it, how did you find it, and what did you change?
We read every answer, and you'll hear back from us within [5] business days, either way.
Our Interview Process:
- Application review: we read your resume, your work samples and your answer to the question above.
- Intro call (20 minutes) with the hiring manager: we’ll get to know each other, and you’ll answer a few short React questions.
- Take-home (about 15 minutes): a small React exercise. Rough code is fine, since we care more about your approach than polish.
- Technical session (45-60 min): A hands-on session with one of our developers where you’ll solve a few small programming tasks and talk through your reasoning and thought process along the way.
- References: two, including a former manager or tech lead.
- Offer: we aim to go from intro call to offer in 2 to 3 weeks.
