NOW HIRING – CLASS 1 LOWBED / HEAVY HAUL OPERATOR

Position Description: Martushev Logging Ltd. is currently seeking an experienced Class 1 Lowbed / Heavy Haul Operator to join our team based out of Whitecourt, Alberta. The successful candidate will be responsible for safely transporting heavy construction and forestry equipment between various projects, forestry operations, and job sites throughout Alberta and surrounding areas. We are looking for a skilled and versatile operator with proven experience operating multiple trailer configurations, independently loading and unloading heavy equipment, and safely navigating challenging terrain and winter road conditions. The truck is equipped with a sleeper berth to accommodate long-haul assignments and overnight travel.

Responsibilities

- Operate Class 1 tractor-trailer combinations to transport heavy equipment, machinery, and materials between various project locations.
- Safely operate various trailer configurations, including lowbed/lowboy trailers, winch trailers, step decks, beavertails, and multi-axle heavy-haul configurations.
- Independently load, unload, and secure heavy construction and forestry equipment, including:
- Excavators
- Dozers
- Packers and compactors
- Feller bunchers
- Processors and harvesters
- Skidders
- Other specialized forestry and construction equipment
- Safely perform winching operations, including loading and securing equipment that cannot be driven onto a trailer.
- Properly install and remove tire chains as required for winter road conditions, steep grades, and remote forestry access roads.
- Assess equipment weights, dimensions, load distribution, and transportation requirements before each move.
- Ensure loads are properly secured using chains, binders, and other approved cargo securement equipment.
- Operate safely on highways, gravel roads, forestry roads, and remote job sites under varying weather and terrain conditions.
- Complete daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections,



preventative maintenance checks, and report mechanical deficiencies.
- Maintain accurate driver logs, transportation documentation, timesheets, and Field Level Hazard Assessments (FLHAs).
- Coordinate equipment moves and deliveries with supervisors, dispatch, and project personnel.
- Maintain the truck, trailer, and associated equipment in a clean, safe, and professional condition.
- Attend and participate in toolbox talks, safety meetings, and required training.
- Report unsafe conditions, hazards, incidents, injuries, and near misses promptly.
- Comply with company safety policies, client requirements, transportation regulations, and Occupational Health and Safety legislation.
- Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow established secure operating procedures.
- Assist with other operational duties as reasonably required.

Qualifications & Requirements

- Valid Class 1 driver's license with air brake endorsement and an acceptable current 5 year commercial driver's abstract.
- Minimum 2 years of demonstrated heavy equipment hauling experience; additional experience preferred.
- Proven experience operating lowbed/lowboy, winch, step deck, and beavertail trailers.
- Must be experienced in independently loading and unloading construction and forestry equipment.
- Strong working knowledge of excavators, dozers, packers, bunchers, processors, skidders, and other heavy machinery.
- Proven experience installing and removing tire chains.
- Experience driving on forestry roads, remote access roads, steep grades, and in challenging winter conditions.
- Experience safely winching, positioning, and securing heavy equipment for transportation.
- Knowledge of oversized and overweight load requirements, permits,



axle weights, and cargo securement regulations.
- Ability to identify and accurately report mechanical issues involving tractors, trailers, and associated equipment.
- Experience operating manual transmission heavy trucks is an asset.
- Strong communication, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Self-motivated, dependable, safety-conscious, and capable of working independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to perform the physical duties associated with loading, chaining, securing, and transporting heavy equipment safely.
- Willingness to complete long-distance hauls and overnight trips as required.
- Ability to meet applicable company and client site-access requirements, including drug and alcohol testing where required.
