About TSR Engineering

TSR Engineering Inc. is a Canadian rail engineering firm with offices in Edmonton and Toronto. We provide technical assurance, systems engineering and engineering advisory services to transit owners, contractors and rolling stock suppliers on some of the largest rail and LRT programs in world wide. Our team is small by design, which means our engineers work directly with clients, see their work through from requirements to commissioning, and grow quickly into technical leadership.

We are looking for an Intermediate Communications Systems Engineer to join our Edmonton office and help deliver communications systems engineering, design review and assurance on major transit and infrastructure projects, from wayside and station systems to the communications equipment on board the vehicles.

What You'll Do

- Develop and review communications systems requirements, concept designs, specifications and design criteria for rail transit and infrastructure projects.

- Support design, integration and review of wayside and station communications subsystems, including:

- Fibre optic backbone and IP networks (outside plant, inside plant, switching, data/equipment rooms)
- CCTV / video management systems
- Public address and passenger information systems (PA/VMS/PIDS)
- Telephony, intercom and emergency telephones
- Radio and wireless voice/data systems (LTE, Wi-Fi, P25/TETRA)
- Access control and intrusion detection
- SCADA and control centre interfaces
- Master clock, fare collection and other ancillary systems

- Support design, integration and review of onboard (rolling stock) communications systems, including:

- Onboard passenger information, PA and destination signage
- Onboard CCTV and video recording
- Passenger emergency intercoms and operator communications
- Onboard networks and train backbone, and interfaces with the train control and management system (TCMS)
- Vehicle radio and train-to-wayside data links for CBTC, live video and passenger information

- Review contractor and supplier design submittals, including vehicle supplier submittals, for compliance with project requirements, standards and the Project Agreement, and prepare clear, defensible review comments.

- Apply systems engineering principles (requirements management, interface management, verification and validation) across the project lifecycle, consistent with INCOSE practice and standards such as EN 50126 and ISO/IEC/IEEE 15288.

- Coordinate interfaces between vehicle, wayside and control centre systems, and with signalling/train control,

traction power, civil, stations and facilities disciplines.

- Participate in factory acceptance, site, vehicle (static and dynamic) and integration testing, and commissioning; witness tests and review test procedures and reports.

- Support cybersecurity requirements and assurance for communications and OT networks, on the wayside and on board.

- Prepare technical reports, memos, cost estimates and contract documents.

- Mentor junior staff and EITs, and contribute to proposals and business development as your career grows.

What You'll Bring

- Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Computer, Telecommunications or Systems Engineering, or a related discipline.

- Registration as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with APEGA, or eligibility for registration with APEGA.

- 5–10 years of progressive experience in communications systems design, integration or assurance on infrastructure projects.

- Solid understanding of IP networking (Layer 2/3, VLANs, redundancy, QoS) and fibre optic network design.

- Working knowledge of several of the communications subsystems listed above.

- Experience reviewing or preparing drawings, specifications and contract documents.

- Strong technical writing and communication skills; comfortable working directly with clients, contractors and suppliers.

- Ability to work on active construction sites, in maintenance facilities and in operating environments, and to travel occasionally.

Assets

- Rail transit or LRT communications systems experience is a strong asset, particularly on P3, design-build or alliance projects.

- Rolling stock communications systems experience is a strong asset, such as onboard PIS/PA, CCTV, passenger intercoms, onboard Ethernet networks, TCMS interfaces, and vehicle radio or train-to-wayside links, whether with a vehicle manufacturer, supplier, operator or owner's engineer.

- Familiarity with rolling stock standards such as IEC 61375 (train communication network), EN 50155 (onboard electronics) and EN 50121 (EMC).

- Familiarity with CBTC or other signalling/train control systems and their communications interfaces.

- Experience with systems integration,

RAMS or safety assurance (EN 50126/50128/50129).

- Cybersecurity experience for rail and operational technology (OT) systems is a strong asset, including applying IEC 62443 and CLC/TS 50701 (railway cybersecurity) to communications networks, onboard systems and control systems.

- Experience with cybersecurity risk assessments, zone and conduit network segmentation, and writing cybersecurity requirements for specifications.

- Experience reviewing supplier cybersecurity cases, security architectures, and vulnerability or penetration test results.

- Familiarity with frameworks such as the NIST Cybersecurity Framework, ISO/IEC 27001 or APTA cybersecurity recommended practices.

- Security certifications such as GICSP, CISSP, ISA/IEC 62443 Cybersecurity certificates, or equivalent.

- Testing and commissioning experience in brownfield or operating rail environments.

- Experience with CCTV coverage modelling, PA acoustic design, or RF coverage design tools.

- Experience with requirements management tools such as IBM DOORS, and network analysis tools such as Wireshark.

- Knowledge of relevant codes and standards (NFPA 130, CSA, IEEE, TIA/EIA).

- Industry certifications such as BICSI RCDD, Cisco CCNA/CCNP, or equivalent.

Why TSR

- Work on landmark transit projects that shape how Canadian cities move.

- Direct exposure to senior engineers and clients from day one, without layers of hierarchy.

- Support for APEGA registration, professional development and industry certifications.

- Competitive salary, comprehensive benefits and flexible hybrid working.

Salary range: Commensurate with experience.
