SAP Technical Lead – Platform & BTP
Number of positions: 1 Job Location: Edmonds 13
Employment type: Permanent Region: Lower Mainland
Hours of work: Full-time (37.5 hrs/wk) Flexible Work Role: Hybrid
Annual salary: $ 131,100.00 - 165,800.00
Position Highlights
As the SAP Technical Lead, you will be the technical authority for BC Hydro’s SAP platform. You will make sure the SAP
landscape is stable, secure, performant and built to evolve. Your scope covers RISE with SAP S/4HANA in private cloud,
SAP for Utilities, SAP SuccessFactors, SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP) and SAP Business Data Cloud, along
with the integrations that connect them to BC Hydro’s enterprise systems.
This is a hands-on leadership role. You will set technical direction, standards and guardrails, and you will also personally
design, build, troubleshoot and review solutions when it matters most.
Within BC Hydro’s capability-led, product-based Technology operating model, you will partner with Technical Product
Owners, Solution Architects, Enterprise Architecture, Cybersecurity and Infrastructure. You will lead and guide internal SAP
technical staff, the Application Managed Service (AMS) provider and the RISE hosting provider. You will hold partners
accountable under the RISE shared responsibility model.
You will focus on platform scope, e.g., S/4HANA core platform, BTP and integration, and SAP technical operations.
What you'll do
SAP Platform Ownership and Operations
- Own the technical health of the SAP landscape, including S/4HANA, IS-U, SuccessFactors integrations, BTP, Business
Data Cloud and supporting SAP systems. This covers availability, performance, capacity, security and lifecycle currency.
- Lead technical management of the RISE with SAP private cloud environment. Work within the RISE roles and
responsibilities model to make sure tasks owned by SAP and by the hosting provider are delivered and tasks owned by BC
Hydro are carried out.
- Oversee HANA database health, performance tuning, data volume management and archiving, and growth forecasting.
Use the findings to inform capacity and run-cost decisions.
- Plan and govern platform lifecycle activities, including S/4HANA upgrades and feature packs, support packs, kernel and
HANA revisions, SuccessFactors release impacts, and patching approaches such as blue/green or near-zero-downtime
methods.
- Lead technical aspects of disaster recovery and resiliency, including DR design, testing, recovery objectives and
runbooks.
- Act as the senior technical escalation point for major incidents. Lead root-cause analysis and drive permanent fixes, not
workarounds.
- Govern transport, change and release management across the landscape, using tools such as SAP Cloud ALM, Solution
Manager/ChaRM or CTS+.
SAP BTP and Integration
- Own the SAP BTP technical architecture and governance, including the global account and subaccount structure,
entitlements and quotas, environments (Cloud Foundry, Kyma, ABAP), role collections and service lifecycle.
- Monitor and optimize BTP consumption against CPEA credits. Identify inefficient or unplanned service use and
recommend corrective action.
- Lead integration design and standards using SAP Integration Suite (Cloud Integration, API Management, Event Mesh),
SAP Cloud Connector, OData/REST APIs, IDocs and event-driven patterns. This includes integrations between S/4HANA,
SuccessFactors and third-party systems.
- Drive side-by-side extension using BTP (CAP, RAP, SAP Build) in line with clean-core principles. Reduce in-core custom
code wherever possible.
- Provide technical leadership for SAP Business Data Cloud and data integration, and for the technical enablement of SAP
Business AI and Joule, including setup, connectivity, security and consumption tracking.
Security, Identity and Compliance
- Lead SAP technical security in partnership with Cybersecurity. This covers authorization and role design standards, SAP
Cloud Identity Services (IAS/IPS), single sign-on, certificate management, system hardening, vulnerability remediation and
security patching.
- Make sure the SAP platform meets BC Hydro’s security, privacy (FOIPPA), data residency, audit and regulatory
requirements. Support internal and external audits with technical evidence.
Hands-On Technical Delivery
- Design, build and review technical solutions where needed, including ABAP (RAP, CDS, clean ABAP), Fiori/UI5,
integration flows, BTP applications and performance fixes.
- Set and enforce development and technical standards, such as code reviews, ATC checks, naming and transport
standards, custom code governance and secure coding practices.
- Review technical designs and deliverables from AMS, system integrator and hosting partners for quality, performance,
security and supportability.
- Lead technical workstreams on projects, including environment strategy, system builds and copies, data migration tooling,
technical cutover and go-live readiness.
Vendor and Service Provider Management
- Manage the technical relationship with SAP and the RISE hosting provider. Track service commitments, SLAs, outage
scheduling, technical change requests and open issues.
- Make full use of SAP support entitlements, such as MaxAttention, Enterprise Support, and expert and safeguarding
services, to reduce risk and improve stability.
- Hold AMS and hosting partners accountable for technical delivery quality, timeliness and adherence to BC Hydro
standards. Escalate where needed.
Leadership and Roadmapping
- Lead, coach and mentor SAP technical staff (Basis, ABAP, integration and BTP), building depth and reducing reliance on
individuals and vendors.
- Build and maintain the SAP technical roadmap, covering platform lifecycle, technical debt reduction, BTP and integration
evolution, observability and automation. Align it with Enterprise Architecture and business priorities.
- Evaluate new SAP technical capabilities and lead Proofs of Concept where they offer real value.
- Track and report technical measures, such as availability, incident trends, performance, custom code reduction, patch
currency and BTP consumption.
What you bring
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems or a related field, or an equivalent combination
of education and experience.
- 10+ years of hands-on SAP technical experience in large enterprise environments, including at least [3–5] years in a
technical lead or architect role.
- Deep expertise in at least one core technical area (SAP Basis/HANA, ABAP development, or integration/BTP), with
working knowledge across the others.
- Hands-on experience with SAP BTP, including Integration Suite and BTP administration and governance.
- Experience with S/4HANA implementations, conversions or upgrades.
- Experience with RISE with SAP, particularly in a SAP NS2 or sovereign or private cloud environment, is a strong asset.
- SAP technical certifications (e.g., SAP Basis/Technology Associate, BTP, Integration Suite, ABAP) are preferred. A cloud
certification (AWS, Azure) is an asset.
What we offer
- This role is categorized as an IT Manager at BC Hydro.
- A comprehensive benefits package
- A minimum of 15 paid vacation days
- A lifetime pension
- Flexible work model, depending on your role type
- Training and development courses
