ROLE The Emergency Department (ED) Aide is a member of the emergency department team and is responsible and accountable for assisting ED nurses, physicians and hospital staff in the supporting care of patients and flow of the fast-paced ED. This role will be involved in supporting the team and patients in the ED, involvement in various housekeeping and portering duties, and overall maintenance of supplies and equipment in an aseptic environment. Priority will be to patients and flow overall.

REQUIRED EDUCATION & CERTIFICATION(S)

- Minimum Grade 12 education
- Aseptic Technique / IPAC education
- Personal Support Worker certificate from an Ontario Community College or equivalent
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate
- Non Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) training

REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE(S)
- One (1) year recent experience in a hospital setting, preferably ED experience
- Knowledge of quality improvement initiatives and ability to support this in the ED
- Mature, self-directed, with excellent communication skills
- Ability to work with a variety of patient populations
- Ability to take vital signs and accurately document, communicate abnormal findings
- Ability to perform skin assessments
- Ability to assist patients with ADLs such as personal care, toileting, feeding and recreational activities
- Ability to assist patients with transfers and ambulation




- Ability to report any patient difficulties with chewing, drinking and/or swallowing
- Working knowledge of or the ability to quickly comprehend the Meditech Information System
- Excellent critical thinking, problem solving and conflict management skills
- Excellent time management and organizational/prioritization skills
- Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills
- Flexible and able to adapt readily to a rapidly changing environment
- Ability to work with people and other members of the health care team
- Attention to detail and the ability to prioritize responsibilities
- Evidence of commitment to continuing education and development
