Imperial’s Kearl Technical Department needs a Senior Geotechnical Engineer skilled in mining dams, earthen structures, and performance assessments.

This senior position supports an operating oil sands mine approximately 70 kilometres north of Fort McMurray. Lead geotechnical investigations, design development, construction oversight, maintenance, and dam safety activities for Kearl’s major earth structures. Coordinate with cross-functional teams, prepare regulatory documentation, and provide technical guidance throughout tailings and mining operations.

The work supports safety and environmental requirements while applying applicable standards and operational needs.

Key Responsibilities

Oversee investigations, design, construction, and maintenance activities

Develop geotechnical parameters through site characterization and data interpretation





Prepare technical reports, documentation, and regulatory submissions

Update OMS manuals, ERPs, EPPs, and dam safety programs

Collaborate across teams on design and safety integration

Requirements

Minimum 15 years’ mining dam experience

Experience with construction and performance reviews

Professional Engineer designation in Alberta or APEGA eligibility

Bachelor’s degree in civil, geotechnical, or related engineering

Strong analytical, communication, leadership, and mentoring abilities
