We are looking for an experienced, reliable, and skilled Lead Carpenter / Deck Builder to join our team full-time. The ideal candidate has extensive hands-on experience building, repairing, and renovating residential decks using pressure-treated wood, composite decking, and vinyl decking systems.
This position requires someone who can work independently, lead projects from start to finish, understand local building codes, and consistently deliver high-quality workmanship.
Key Responsibilities
- Build and install new residential decks using pressure-treated lumber, composite decking, and vinyl decking systems.
- Perform complete deck renovations, repairs, resurfacing, and structural upgrades.
- Frame decks, including installing posts, beams, joists, footings, and other structural components.
- Install deck boards, stairs, railings, fascia, skirting, and finishing details.
- Inspect existing decks, identify structural issues, and recommend appropriate repairs or replacements.
- Read and interpret construction drawings, measurements, and project specifications.
- Ensure all deck construction complies with applicable Alberta building codes, local regulations, and safety standards.
- Safely and efficiently operate all necessary power tools, hand tools, and construction equipment.
- Accurately measure, cut, assemble, and install construction materials.
- Manage job-site organization, material usage, and daily project progress.
- Lead and supervise helpers or junior carpenters when required.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work setting.
- Complete projects efficiently while maintaining excellent workmanship and attention to detail.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Proven experience as a Deck Builder, Framing Carpenter, or Residential Carpenter.
- Strong experience with pressure-treated wood decks, composite decking, and vinyl deck installations.
- Experience renovating, repairing,
and rebuilding existing decks.
- Excellent understanding of deck framing, structural construction, stair building, and railing installation.
- Knowledge of applicable building codes, structural requirements, and construction best practices.
- Ability to read construction drawings and work from measurements.
- Proficiency with all standard carpentry tools, including circular saws, mitre saws, table saws, drills, impact drivers, nail guns, levels, and other construction equipment.
- Valid driver's licence is mandatory.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Physically capable of performing construction work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Reliable, punctual, professional, and committed to quality work.
- Ability to lead a small crew and coordinate daily construction activities.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience as a Lead Carpenter or Crew Leader.
- Experience installing different composite decking systems, such as Trex, TimberTech, or Fiberon.
- Experience with waterproof vinyl decking membranes and installation systems.
- Experience with deck inspections, structural repairs, and complete deck replacements.
- Experience building pergolas, privacy screens, fences, and other outdoor structures.
- Journeyperson Carpenter certification is an asset but not mandatory.
What We're Looking For We need someone who knows how to build a deck properly from start to finish, not just someone who can install deck boards.
The ideal candidate understands structural framing, building codes, proper installation methods, and finishing details. They should be comfortable taking responsibility for a project, solving problems on-site, and delivering skilled results without constant supervision.
Our priority is finding someone experienced, dependable, efficient, and proud of their craftsmanship.
