About Qualimet
Qualimet is an Edmonton-based engineering, inspection and materials testing company that has been serving industry since 1973.
Our work supports welding, fabrication, construction and industrial Clients through materials testing, welding procedure development, welder qualification testing, structural steel inspection, metallurgical engineering and quality-system services.
Our machine shop supports Qualimet's Materials Testing and Welder Qualification operations. The work is primarily precision, low-volume machining of test specimens rather than repetitive production machining.
The Opportunity
Qualimet is looking for a 3rd or 4th Year Machinist Apprentice or Journeyperson Machinist to join our Edmonton team.
Previous experience in a materials testing facility is not required. This is specialized work, and we expect to teach the testing-specific aspects of the position.
What matters is that you bring strong machining fundamentals: setting up and operating equipment, reading drawings and specifications, working accurately to tolerance, using precision measuring equipment and taking ownership of the quality of your work.
We also value curiosity. We want someone who wants to understand what they are working on, asks questions when something doesn't make sense and is interested in learning how their machining work connects to the testing that follows.
You will prepare specimens used in materials testing, welding procedure qualification and welder qualification. The work varies considerably from day to day and frequently involves individual specimens or small batches, different materials, configurations and dimensional requirements.
If you enjoy the machining trade, like solving problems and prefer varied precision work over repetitive production, this role offers an opportunity to apply your skills in a different kind of machine shop.
What You Will Do
- Set up and operate conventional machine tools for precision machining and specimen preparation
- Machine metallic test specimens to specified dimensions and tolerances
- Read and interpret drawings, sketches, specifications and machining instructions
- Determine appropriate machining sequences, tooling and setups
- Perform cutting, turning, milling, drilling,
grinding and other machining operations as required
- Measure and verify finished work using micrometers, verniers, calipers and other precision measuring equipment
- Prepare specimens used in mechanical testing and welding qualification
- Maintain identification and traceability of specimens throughout the machining process
- Inspect your work and verify conformance with specified dimensions and tolerances
- Ask questions, investigate inconsistencies and seek to understand the purpose and requirements of the work rather than simply completing the machining operation
- Work with Qualimet's laboratory, welding and technical personnel to meet testing requirements
- Maintain machines, tooling and the work area in safe working condition
- Follow Qualimet's safety, quality and documentation requirements
- Assist with other shop and testing activities when required
The underlying machining work is consistent with Alberta's machinist trade, including machine setup, precision machining, interpretation of specifications and dimensional verification.
What We Are Looking For
Required
- Registered 3rd or 4th Year Machinist Apprentice or Journeyperson Machinist
- Strong conventional machining skills
- Experience setting up and operating lathes, mills and other machine tools
- Ability to read drawings, sketches and machining specifications
- Ability to work accurately to specified dimensions and tolerances
- Proficiency with micrometers, verniers, calipers and other precision measuring equipment
- Good mechanical aptitude and practical problem-solving ability
- Strong attention to detail
- Curiosity and a willingness to learn, including asking questions when requirements, dimensions or instructions do not make sense
- Ability to work independently and as part of a small technical team
- Commitment to safe work practices
- Ability to work on-site at our Edmonton facility
Assets Experience in any of the following would be an asset, not a requirement:
- Materials or mechanical testing
- Machining test specimens
- Metallurgical or testing laboratories
- Welding or fabrication environments
- Machining a variety of steels, alloys and other materials
- Working within a quality-controlled or accredited environment
Why Work at Qualimet? This isn't a high-volume production machining position.
Our machine shop supports technical testing and qualification work, creating a different environment for a machinist:
- Variety: Individual specimens and small batches rather than continually producing the same components
- Precision: Dimensional accuracy and specimen preparation matter to the testing work that follows
- Problem solving: Different specimens, materials and testing requirements create different machining challenges
- Curiosity: We encourage you to understand what you're working on, ask questions and learn what happens to your work after it leaves the machine shop
- Technical exposure: Work alongside people involved in materials testing, welding, inspection and engineering
- Specialized experience: Learn an uncommon application of the machining trade without being expected to already know it
- Day shift: Regular Monday-to-Friday work
- Established company: Qualimet has served industrial Clients since 1973
