About MICA Controls
MICA Controls Ltd. is a Canadian engineering solutions company specializing in industrial automation, process control, and functional safety solutions.
We deliver engineering solutions including Burner Management Systems (BMS), High Integrity Pressure Protection Systems (HIPPS), and other safety-critical systems for industrial and municipal applications across Canada.
Our team works collaboratively to deliver practical, reliable, and technically sound solutions to complex engineering challenges.
The Opportunity
We are seeking an experienced Process or Mechanical Engineer to join our growing engineering team.
This position combines the responsibilities of a Senior Project Engineer with elements of a Principal Engineer role. The successful candidate will bring strong technical expertise, sound engineering judgment, and the ability to lead complex projects from concept through execution.
A strong understanding of industrial safety systems, particularly Burner Management Systems (BMS) and High Integrity Pressure Protection Systems (HIPPS), is essential to this role. The successful candidate must understand the application of these systems within the process industries and be capable of contributing to their engineering design, technical oversight, and successful project execution.
We are looking for someone who is equally comfortable working through detailed technical challenges, providing engineering oversight, mentoring other engineers, and interacting directly with clients.
The ideal candidate will have a strong background in the process industries, with experience in industrial facilities such as oil and gas, petrochemical, chemical processing, refining, or related sectors.
This is a remote opportunity with some travel required for client meetings, project activities, and site visits.
Key Responsibilities
Engineering & Technical Leadership
- Provide senior-level technical expertise in process and/or mechanical engineering for industrial projects, with a particular focus on BMS, HIPPS, and functional safety applications.
- Lead engineering design, technical reviews, and the development of engineering deliverables.
- Apply sound engineering judgment to complex technical challenges, ensuring solutions meet applicable codes, standards, and client requirements.
- Review and approve engineering calculations, drawings, specifications,
and technical documentation within professional authorization.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to intermediate and junior engineers.
- Support the development and implementation of engineering standards, procedures, and best practices.
Project Engineering & Execution
- Lead and coordinate engineering projects throughout the project lifecycle, from initial design through commissioning and project completion.
- Manage technical deliverables, project schedules, budgets, and engineering resources.
- Coordinate with multidisciplinary engineering teams, vendors, contractors, and clients.
- Identify technical risks and develop practical solutions to maintain project quality, timelines, and budgets.
- Provide technical oversight and support during equipment procurement, fabrication, installation, testing, and commissioning.
Client & Stakeholder Collaboration
- Act as a technical point of contact for clients throughout project execution.
- Participate in technical discussions, design reviews, and project meetings.
- Work collaboratively with internal engineering teams to ensure project objectives are achieved.
- Support proposal development, technical evaluations, and the identification of engineering solutions for new opportunities.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
- Approximately 10+ years of relevant engineering experience, including substantial experience in the process industries.
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation in Canada, or eligibility for registration with a Canadian provincial engineering association.
- Demonstrated technical understanding of Burner Management Systems (BMS), High Integrity Pressure Protection Systems (HIPPS), and their applications within industrial process safety.
- Robust technical knowledge of process and/or mechanical systems used in industrial facilities.
- Demonstrated experience leading engineering projects and coordinating multidisciplinary technical teams.
- Experience preparing, reviewing, and interpreting engineering calculations, specifications, drawings, and technical documentation.
- Knowledge of applicable engineering codes, standards, and industry best practices.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving abilities.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work directly with clients and internal project teams.
- Ability to work independently in a remote environment while contributing to a collaborative team.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in one or more of the following areas would be considered an asset:
- Oil and gas processing, refining, petrochemical, chemical processing, or other process industries.
- Combustion systems, fired equipment, and pressure protection applications.
- Process safety, hazard assessments, HAZOP studies, or risk assessments.
- Piping systems, pressure equipment, process equipment, and associated engineering standards.
- Instrumentation, industrial automation, PLC/DCS, and control systems.
- Engineering design, construction support, commissioning, and troubleshooting of industrial facilities.
- Previous experience in a Senior Project Engineer, Lead Engineer, or Principal Engineer capacity.
