The Canadian Light Source Inc. (CLSI) is a national research facility of the University of Saskatchewan. CLS produces very bright light to explore the nature and structure of molecules and serves national and international users from academia, industry, and government institutions. With 22 beamlines enabling advanced imaging, spectroscopy, diffraction, and microfabrication capabilities, CLS is a globally recognized centre for multidisciplinary scientific excellence.

CLSI is now accepting applications for an Associate Scientist position on the SyLMAND beamline. SyLMAND (Synchrotron Laboratory for Micro and Nano Device Fabrication) provides specialized microfabrication capabilities using synchrotron‑based X‑ray lithography and related processing technologies. The beamline supports the fabrication and development of micro‑scale devices and structures for researchers and industrial users across a variety of scientific and technological applications.

The successful candidate will support the effective operation, maintenance, and ongoing development of the SyLMAND beamline and associated microfabrication facilities. We are seeking a highly motivated individual who demonstrates strong technical aptitude, attention to detail, and a commitment to scientific excellence. The ideal candidate will enjoy working in a collaborative, interdisciplinary environment and possess a proactive approach to solving technical challenges while supporting a diverse user community.

Responsibilities:

- Training and supporting users to safely and effectively utilize the SyLMAND beamline and associated microfabrication equipment.
- Preparing samples for ultraviolet (UV)

and X‑ray lithography processes, including design verification, exposure, development, etching, and metal deposition activities.
- Operating and maintaining beamline instrumentation, lithography systems, cleanroom equipment, and supporting infrastructure.
- Assisting users and beamline staff with experimental planning, sample preparation, process development, and troubleshooting.
- Monitoring and maintaining cleanroom operations to ensure equipment reliability, process consistency, and compliance with safety requirements.
- Analyzing and resolving routine technical issues while contributing to solutions for more complex instrumentation and process challenges.
- Assisting the Beamline Responsible with beamline maintenance, upgrades, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Supporting team-oriented research and development activities, including projects involving MEMS and other advanced microfabrication applications.
- Preparing technical documentation, operating procedures, and user‑support materials.
- Developing technical expertise in beamline operations, lithography processes, and microfabrication technologies.
- Working flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, is a requirement of the position.

Qualifications:

- A relevant Master’s or Ph.D. degree in a core science or engineering discipline is required.

- Experience with lithography processes, photoresist patterning, microfabrication techniques, semiconductor processing, MEMS fabrication, or related laboratory operations is required.
- Experience working in a cleanroom environment would be considered an asset.
- Experience with vacuum systems, thin‑film deposition, etching technologies, microscopy, or scientific instrumentation would be considered an asset.
- Synchrotron experience would be considered an asset but is not required.
- Candidates should demonstrate a strong aptitude for scientific instrumentation, experimental problem‑solving, and collaborative research activities.
- Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills are required.

Salary Range: The Salary Range is $69,880 - $94,544. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
