Systems Administrator

Job Summary

Title - Systems Administrator Department - Client Support Services

Type - Full-time, permanent, salaried

Reports to - CTO

Location - Downtown Toronto office, with occasional client site work

As a Systems Administrator at Business Cloud, you are responsible for the security, availability, and recoverability of the systems our clients depend on across a portfolio of Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace environments. You remediate security findings, keep servers and network infrastructure patched and supported, verify that backups can be restored, and maintain consistent configuration across cloud tenants, identity, and endpoint management platforms.

Much of this work is proactive and does not start with a ticket. You find configuration drift, unresolved findings, and maintenance gaps through routine review, and you close them through direct work, automation, or coordination with other teams. Support handles frontline user issues; you own system-level problems and outages.

Your work falls into three areas:

- Reactive: Responding to security alerts and system-level escalations

- Maintenance: Carrying out recurring maintenance such as patching, backup verification, and monitoring review

- Improvement: Delivering small non-billable changes, cleanup, and automation that make environments easier to manage

Most work is performed remotely from our downtown Toronto office, with occasional on-site work for servers and network equipment. The role is client-facing. Some maintenance windows fall outside standard business hours.

Key Responsibilities

- Security and Incident Response: Triage and remediate security findings and alerts from managed detection and response, Microsoft Defender, and endpoint security tools. Lead technical containment, eradication, and recovery during security incidents, preserving evidence and documenting findings and follow-up actions.

- Backup and Business Continuity: Administer backup and continuity platforms, verify coverage and job health, and resolve problems. Perform and document testing, confirm restore readiness before major changes, and escalate continuity risks that cannot be resolved technically.

- Server Administration and Lifecycle: Administer physical and virtual servers, including domain controllers, Hyper-V and VMware, directory synchronization, and remote and break-glass access. Coordinate patching and maintenance, validate service health, and plan upgrades.

- Network, DNS, and Certificates: Administer firewalls, switches, wireless, and VPN infrastructure across different environments, including firmware and alert response. Manage DNS zones,

mail authentication records, and certificate renewals.

- Cloud Platforms and Identity: Administer client cloud environments, primarily Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace, along with Azure and related services, keeping tenant configuration, identity, and access policies consistent and secure. Manage privileged and emergency access through a documented, controlled process.

- Endpoint Management Platforms: Administer endpoint management platforms such as Intune and our RMM to keep managed devices patched, compliant, and protected.

- Health and Documentation: Monitor for configuration drift and correct it. Conduct proactive environment reviews and cleanup efforts. Own small non-billable changes. Maintain current documentation of systems, configurations, and their relevant procedures.

- Reporting and Automation: Maintain and leverage reporting to automate repetitive checks and administrative tasks.

- Other duties as required.

How do we define success for your role?

- Security findings and alerts are triaged promptly and tracked to resolution, with an owner and status for anything left open.

- Patching runs on a predictable schedule, and servers or devices that are behind or nearing end of support are known and documented, not discovered during an incident.

- Backups are monitored, failures are resolved quickly, and restore tests are performed and recorded on a regular schedule.

- Monitoring alerts have an owner and are acted on, and certificates and domains are renewed before they expire.

- Client environments move steadily toward our standards, with drift found through routine review and exceptions documented.

- Documentation is current enough that a colleague can pick up your work.

- Recurring manual checks are progressively replaced with reporting and automation.

- You contribute to an inclusive, engaging work environment and continue developing your expertise.

Your Experience and Education

- 3+ years of systems administration experience, preferably supporting multiple clients or sites.

- Hands-on experience with Windows Server, Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, and Hyper-V or VMware.

- Robust working knowledge of Microsoft 365 and Entra ID, or equivalent depth in Google Workspace.

- Experience with endpoint management through Intune or a remote monitoring and management (RMM) platform.

- Working knowledge of networking, including firewalls, VLANs, VPN, and wireless.

- Understanding of security fundamentals, including access control, patching, and responding to security alerts.

- Experience administering backup systems and troubleshooting backup failures.

- Working knowledge of PowerShell or a similar scripting language.

- Strong troubleshooting, documentation, and written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical issues to clients.

- Availability for occasional after-hours maintenance.

- Post-secondary education in a related field, or equivalent experience.

Preferred Experience

- Experience at an MSP.

- Experience administering both Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace.

- Experience with managed detection and response tools or incident response.

- Experience with cloud-managed network platforms such as Meraki or UniFi.

- Experience managing macOS and mobile devices.

- Experience performing restore tests or disaster recovery exercises.

- Experience building reporting or automation to replace manual checks.

- Familiarity with platforms such as Zendesk and Hudu, and with client-managed products such as password managers, VoIP, and phishing awareness tools.

- Relevant certifications, such as Microsoft 365 or Azure Administrator, Google Workspace Administrator, or networking certifications.

- A valid driver's licence and access to a vehicle.
