The Town of Hinton is a growing community of 10,000 residents set in the foothills of Alberta’s Rocky Mountains, on the south bank of the Athabasca River at the junction of the Yellowhead (Highway 16) and Highway 40. Known as the “Gateway to the Rockies,” Hinton sits just 15 minutes east of the Jasper National Park gates and about 300 km west of Edmonton, and serves as an important commercial, service and supply centre for the surrounding region of west-central Alberta. Hinton began in 1911 as a Grand Trunk Pacific Railway station, named for the railway’s general manager, William P. Hinton, and grew with the opening of local coal mines in the 1930s. The construction of Alberta’s first pulp mill in the mid-1950s brought rapid growth, and the original townsite and the new neighbouring community of Drinnan came together to form the present-day town, incorporated in 1958. Today Hinton has a diverse economy anchored by forestry, mining, energy, rail and transportation, with a median family income above the provincial average. The Hinton pulp mill, acquired in 2024 by global packaging company Mondi, is planning a major investment in a current kraft paper machine, and West Fraser continues its forestry operations in the area. The Vista Coal Mine east of town, already Canada’s largest thermal coal mine and a major local employer, received regulatory approval for a significant expansion in 2026. CN’s Hinton rail yard, natural gas activity and the provincially operated Hinton Training Centre, which delivers wildfire and forest management training to government and industry. Tourism and outdoor recreation are a growing part of the economy, and recent momentum includes the highest level of housing starts in a decade and $36 million in development permits issued in 2025.

The Municipality is Governed by an elected Mayor and 6 Councillors. The Town delivers a full range of municipal services including water and wastewater, roads and transportation, public transit, planning and development, parks and trails, recreation, Family and Community Support Services (FCSS), bylaw enforcement and emergency management. Fire and wildfire protection is provided by Hinton Fire Rescue, policing by the Hinton RCMP Detachment, and ambulance service by Hinton EMS. Residents have access to the Hinton Healthcare Centre, a 23-bed hospital with a 24/7 emergency department and the Hinton Community Cancer Centre, as well as the Hinton Continuing Care Centre, community health services and local medical, dental and allied health clinics. Hinton’s natural setting is central to its exceptional quality of life. The Dr. Duncan Murray Recreation Centre houses the community’s aquatic centre and ice arenas, and its modernization is a current Council priority. The Beaver Boardwalk at Maxwell Lake, billed as the world’s longest freshwater boardwalk, offers more than three kilometres of wetland trails with close‑up views of beavers and other wildlife, and was recently restored through a $2.5 million provincial forestry grant. Mountain bikers enjoy the Hinton Bike Park, one of the largest free‑access bike parks in the province, and an extensive network of trails maintained by the Hinton Mountain Bike Association. Nearby William A. Switzer Provincial Park offers lakes,

camping and the Hinton Nordic Centre, with more than 35 km of groomed cross‑country ski trails and a biathlon range that has hosted national and international competitions. The community also enjoys an 18‑hole golf course, a public library, the Performing Arts Theatre for Hinton (The PATH), the Alberta Forest Service Museum, the Northern Rockies Museum of Culture and Heritage, sports fields, a skate park and a growing system of town trails. Hinton is served by two publicly funded school divisions offering five schools. Grande Yellowhead Public School Division operates Crescent Valley School and École Mountain View School (Junior Kindergarten to Grade 7) and Harry Collinge High School (Grades 8 to 12), with French Immersion offered at École Mountain View and Harry Collinge. Evergreen Catholic School Division operates Gregory Catholic School (Junior Kindergarten to Grade 4) and Father Gerard Redmond Community Catholic School (Grades 5 to 12). Post‑secondary and adult learning is available locally through Northwestern Polytechnic, the Hinton Employment and Learning Place (HELP) and the Hinton Training Centre, with universities and colleges in Edmonton about three hours away. The community enjoys a full calendar of annual events. The Winter Magic Festival, held every February since 1988, brings two weeks of winter sports and cultural activities to venues across town and in Switzer Park, including the Hinton Growler Fat Bike Endurance Race and the family‑friendly Chili Loppet ski race. Each July 1, the Föhn Festival and Canada Day celebration showcases Hinton’s multicultural heritage with a parade, pancake breakfast, cultural food booths, live music, an open‑air market and fireworks.
