Worship Musician (Guitar & Vocals) – Grace United Church, Caledonia
Grace United Church in Caledonia is looking for a Christian guitarist and vocalist to help lead congregational singing on Sunday mornings. This part-time role reports to our Worship Director. Our music draws on Voices United, More Voices and contemporary worship songs, usually with piano. We want someone whose playing supports the congregation’s singing rather than replacing it, and who sees this work as ministry as well as music.
What you’ll do
- Lead congregational singing on guitar and vocals at Sunday worship, [#] Sundays per month
- Arrive for sound check and a run-through before the service
- Play with the pianist and other musicians, adapting to each week’s instrumentation
- Learn each week’s music ahead of time, in keys the congregation can sing, and attend scheduled rehearsals
- Prepare chord charts or lead sheets where hymnal settings need adapting for guitar
- Offer special music (prelude, offertory or a reflective piece) when the service calls for it
- Take part in special services such as Christmas Eve, Holy Week and Easter
- Help introduce new songs, and encourage volunteer singers and instrumentalists
- Work with sound and video volunteers on set-up, levels and lyrics on screen
Working with the Worship Director
The Worship Director leads the music ministry and makes the final decisions on songs, arrangements and the shape of each service. You’ll receive each week’s music by [day], suggest songs and guitar-led settings, follow the Director’s lead during the service, and give at least two weeks’ notice of any absence.
What we’re looking for
- A committed Christian with an active faith, comfortable in the life and ethos of the United Church of Canada
- Someone who sees leading music as helping others worship, not as performance
- Dependable, punctual, well prepared, humble and teachable
- Strong rhythm guitar (acoustic or electric) with steady tempo and clean chord changes
- A confident, in-tune voice that can lead a congregation and sing harmony
- Able to sing and play at the same time while cueing a congregation
- Reads chord charts and lead sheets; can transpose and use a capo
- Comfortable with both hymns and contemporary worship songs
Nice to have: experience leading worship in a congregation, reading standard notation, a second instrument, and familiarity with sound equipment, monitors and lyric projection.
A Vulnerable Sector police check and agreement with our secure-church policies are required before starting.
Schedule: Sunday mornings, arriving by 9 a.m. for a 10:30 a.m service. Rehearsal happens before the service. Special services by arrangement.
How to apply
Apply through Indeed with your resume and a short cover letter about your faith journey and your experience in worship. Please include a link (YouTube, Google Drive, etc.) to a recording of you singing and playing two songs: one hymn and one contemporary worship song. We’ll ask shortlisted applicants for two references, including one who can speak to their involvement in a church community, and invite them to meet the Worship Director and minister and play through a few songs together.
