Environmental Inspector

Velocity Group is seeking a motivated, detail-oriented experienced Environmental Inspector to support the construction of an EPEA-approved pipeline project in Alberta.

This is a field-based role working directly with the construction team to help ensure environmental requirements and commitments are understood, implemented, documented, and maintained throughout construction.

We are open to candidates interested in either a contract position or employment with Velocity Group.

What You'll Be Doing

As the Environmental Inspector, you will be Velocity's boots on the ground for environmental compliance during pipeline construction. Responsibilities will include:

- Monitor construction activities for compliance with the project's Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act (EPEA) Approval, Environmental Protection Plan (EPP), environmental alignment sheets, permits and other applicable environmental commitments.
- Work directly with construction supervisors, contractors and environmental personnel to implement required environmental mitigation.
- Conduct routine environmental inspections of the pipeline right-of-way and associated work areas.
- Identify environmental concerns and potential non-compliances and communicate them promptly to the appropriate project personnel.
- Document environmental observations, mitigation measures, deficiencies and corrective actions.
- Monitor activities involving soils, watercourses, wetlands, vegetation, wildlife, weeds, erosion and sediment control, and reclamation.
- Confirm that environmental mitigation measures are properly implemented and identify where corrective measures are required.

- Assist with responses to unexpected environmental conditions or previously unidentified environmental features.
- Participate in construction meetings and provide environmental updates to the project team.
- Maintain clear and accurate daily environmental inspection records, including photographs and supporting documentation.
- Support environmental incident reporting and follow-up where required.
- Coordinate with environmental specialists or Qualified Aquatic Environment Specialists (QAES) when specialized assessment or direction is required.
- Support post-construction inspections, deficiency tracking and reclamation activities as required.

The project's EPP specifically contemplates Environmental Inspector involvement in issues such as environmental non-compliance, unidentified wetlands or watercourses, weed infestations, and post-construction erosion, subsidence, reclamation and drainage deficiencies.

What We're Looking For

The ideal candidate will have:

- Previous pipeline construction environmental inspection or monitoring experience.
- Strong working knowledge of Alberta environmental requirements applicable to pipeline construction.
- Experience working with EPEA approvals and Environmental Protection Plans.
- Practical understanding of pipeline construction and reclamation activities.

- Experience identifying and managing environmental issues related to soils, wetlands, watercourses, vegetation, wildlife, weeds, erosion and reclamation.
- Strong field documentation and report-writing skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively with construction personnel, contractors, environmental specialists and project management.
- Ability to make practical environmental decisions in an active construction environment.
- Strong attention to detail and a proactive approach to identifying environmental risks.

Current Alberta requirements are particularly relevant here. The AER's SED 004 addresses EPEA pipeline conservation and reclamation approvals, including project effects, mitigation, Environmental Protection Plans and verification of mitigation effectiveness.

Qualifications

Preference will be given to candidates with:

- Diploma or degree in environmental science, biology, reclamation, forestry, agriculture, natural resource management or a related discipline.
- Skilled designation or eligibility for a relevant Alberta professional designation.
- Previous experience on EPEA-regulated pipeline projects.
- Experience with environmental inspection during clearing, grading, topsoil salvage, watercourse/wetland crossings, pipeline installation, cleanup and reclamation.
- Valid Class 5 driver's license and ability to work safely in remote field environments.
