Happy Pooch Superior – Thunder Bay District

$19–$24/hour | Part-time, 10–30 hours/week

Happy Pooch Superior is a premium dog boarding, day camp and grooming facility on a beautiful rural property north of Thunder Bay. We provide enrichment-focused, compassionate, force-free care for dogs and cats.

We're looking for a dependable, hardworking and self-motivated person who genuinely enjoys animals. This role requires initiative, attention to detail, valuable communication and the ability to work independently once trained.

Responsibilities

- Feed, exercise, supervise and provide enrichment for dogs and cats
- Monitor animal health, behaviour and well-being
- Use gentle, positive, fear-free handling techniques
- Assist with grooming, including bathing, drying and brushing
- Clean kennels, yards, bedding and common areas
- Communicate with clients and team members, including by phone and through booking software
- Take daily photos and maintain care records
- Assist with light property maintenance and outdoor projects

Qualifications

- Dependability is essential: Consistent attendance, punctuality and following through on responsibilities
- Hands-on experience caring for animals, including personal or family pets
- Farm, stable, veterinary, shelter or kennel experience is an asset
- A positive attitude, strong work ethic and willingness to learn
- Good judgment, communication skills and the ability to take initiative
- Commitment to force-free, reward-based animal care

Professional animal-care experience is not required. Training is provided.

The reality of the job:



Animal care is rewarding but physically demanding, noisy and messy! Expect barking dogs, cleaning animal waste, lifting up to 40 lbs, walking on uneven terrain and working outdoors in all seasons.

Schedule & Compensation

- $19–$24/hour, depending on experience
- Approximately 10–30 hours weekly, with potential to increase
- Hours depend on availability, skills and seasonal demand
- Regular workdays are possible, although shift lengths may vary
- Shifts fall between 7:30 a.m. and 8:30 p.m., including weekends and holidays
- Weekend and holiday coverage is shared among staff
- Double-time hourly pay for hours worked on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day
- No overnight shifts

Location: Approximately 15 minutes north of the Thunder Bay Expressway. Reliable personal transportation and appropriate winter tires are required.

- Our shifts fall between 7:30 a.m. and 8:30 p.m., seven days a week. Please list your availability for each day of the week, including your earliest start and latest finish times. We require availability for at least one weekday shift starting by 3 p.m. and one weekend shift.
- We operate 365 days a year. Staff share coverage during long weekends, statutory holidays and the Christmas/New Year's period. Are you available to participate in rotating holiday coverage, including some shifts on Christmas Day, Boxing Day or New Year's Day?
- Briefly describe your experience caring for dogs, cats or other animals. Personal, farm and professional experience all count.
- Can you perform the essential duties of this role? These include cleaning animal waste, lifting up to 40 lbs, handling dogs of various sizes and working outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Are you willing to consistently follow our force-free, reward-based animal-handling methods, including avoiding aversive corrections?
- Do you have your own reliable vehicle and the ability to travel to our rural facility year-round, including with appropriate winter tires?
