Developmental Support Worker / Personal Support Worker / Health Care Aide - Waterdown, Waterdown, ON - CAD$162.00/week
Description
About the Client:
We're seeking a compassionate caregiver to provide companionship visits for a gentleman currently residing in long-term care at Alexander Place in Watertown. He's a very social person who enjoys engaging conversation, watching TV programs like Wheel of Fortune, Family Feud, baseball, and hockey. He has an iPad with memory games that he enjoys but needs assistance to use. He's currently confined to bed most of the time due to mobility challenges and experiences dizziness when attempting to sit upright or transfer to his wheelchair. He has significant hearing difficulties and wears hearing aids (staff can assist with placement on visit days). He also experiences some memory issues. Despite these challenges, he responds well to friendly, patient interaction and would greatly benefit from regular social stimulation to combat the isolation he's currently experiencing.
Responsibilities:
- Provide warm, engaging companionship during visits
- Engage in conversation and active listening
- Assist with iPad memory games and cognitive activities
- Watch television programs together and provide commentary
- Encourage participation in activities within his comfort level
- Communicate clearly and patiently, accommodating hearing difficulties
- Provide visit updates to family and care team after each session
- Respect his independence and preferences while offering gentle encouragement
What We're Looking For:
- Experience working with seniors, particularly those with mobility limitations and hearing impairments
- Patient, calm demeanor with excellent communication skills
- Ability to bring positive energy and make the client feel comfortable
- Comfortable working in long-term care environments
- Reliable and consistent with scheduled visits
- English speaking
- Female caregiver preferred (client's preference)
- Ability to engage someone who is bedbound in meaningful activities
- Understanding of memory challenges and cognitive support techniques
Schedule:
Twice weekly visits, approximately 3 hours per visit (6 hours total weekly). Preferred timing is afternoon visits, after lunch (post-12:00 PM). Consistent days and times each week to build routine and familiarity. This is a long-term companion care position with the goal of establishing a meaningful ongoing relationship.
