Personal Support Worker - Greely, Ottawa - CAD$405.00/week
Description
We are seeking an experienced and compassionate PSW to support an 84-year-old gentleman with Parkinson's dementia who recently suffered a stroke. This is a meaningful chance to make a real difference in the life of a veteran and his family.
About the Client: Our client is a former military member with 35 years of service. He is a quiet, old-fashioned gentleman who values calm, patient care. Following his recent stroke approximately three weeks ago, he has experienced significant changes in mobility and communication. He now requires a two-person assist for transfers, is largely non-verbal (responding mainly with yes/no answers), needs assistance with feeding, and is fully incontinent. He experiences anxiety which is being managed with medication. Prior to the stroke, he was mobile with a four-wheel walker and fully communicative. The family has created a well-equipped home environment including a suite with a hospital bed, wheelchair with recline function, and a Sara Stedy lift for transfers.
Responsibilities: You will serve as the primary support person during critical times of day, coordinating with Ontario Health at Home PSWs who provide morning and evening care. Your role includes monitoring the client's comfort and anxiety levels, assisting with feeding, providing companionship, advocating for his needs, and assisting with two-person transfers when family or other PSWs are available. You will help maintain his dignity and comfort throughout the day,
understanding that he may fall asleep in his wheelchair and simply needs a calm presence nearby.
What We're Looking For: We need someone with PSW experience who is comfortable with complex care needs including dementia, stroke recovery, and mobility assistance. You must be fluent in English, as clear communication is essential. The ideal caregiver is calm, patient, and respectful of personal space - not overly talkative or in-your-face. Experience with Sara Stedy lifts is beneficial but training can be provided. You should be comfortable working alongside family members and coordinating with other healthcare providers. This family values someone who will fit naturally into their easygoing household.
Schedule: Monday through Friday, split shift: 7:30 AM to 10:30 AM and 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM. The morning shift allows you to be present when Ontario Health PSWs arrive around 8:00 AM. Weekend coverage is not required as family is available.

Additional Considerations
Client is an 84-year-old former military veteran (35 years service) who recently suffered a stroke approximately three weeks ago. He has Parkinson's dementia and requires a two-person assist for transfers. He is mostly non-verbal, answering only yes/no in a raspy voice, and needs assistance with feeding. Client is totally incontinent and cannot roll independently. He experiences significant anxiety, currently being managed with medication adjustments. Client is a quiet, old-fashioned individual who becomes agitated with loud or overly assertive caregivers - he needs someone calm and patient who can sit quietly with him when he doesn't want to talk. Equipment available includes a reclining wheelchair, Sara Stedy lift for transfers, and a hospital bed. Ontario Health at Home PSWs visit mornings (around 8am) and evenings for two-person transfers and personal care. Family member will be present to assist with two-person tasks. Client has his own suite within the family home but joins family for meals and activities. The primary caregiver (daughter) manages chronic migraines and needs someone who can act as an advocate and oversee care when she cannot be present.
