Calgary
Since 1949, Midwest has served Western Canada as a trusted, employee-owned partner in geomatics. We have successfully expanded into a multidisciplinary firm, with a proven track record of delivering specialized midstream engineering projects across the region. We focus on building lasting relationships with clients by providing industry-leading project solutions that are customer-centric and technology-driven. Our success is defined by engaged employees, unbending safe work practices, loyal clients and doing the right thing.
We are looking for an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) to support our Engineering and Major Pipeline Projects team from our Calgary location. Summary of Responsibilities
Working under the direct supervision of the Senior Engineer and Major Pipeline Projects Manager, the Engineer-in-Training (EIT) supports midstream mechanical, pipeline, and facility engineering projects from conceptual design through construction completion. Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Assist in the engineering design and preparation of midstream deliverables from conceptual phase through construction support, including isometric plans, site plans, valve assembly plans, demolition drawings, bills of materials (BOMs), hydrostatic test plans and reports, and design basis memorandums (DBMs).
- Apply fundamental mechanical and pipeline engineering principles, codes,
and standards (CSA Z662, CSA Z245, ASME B31.3, ASME B31.4, and ASME B31.8) under the mentorship and technical direction of a Qualified Engineer (P.Eng.).
- Perform piping and pipeline stress modeling (AutoPIPE), wall thickness and pressure design checks, hydrotest pressure calculations, and crossing assessments (HDD, bore, and open cut).
- Support the design and layout of meter and regulator stations, liquid pipeline and pump stations, launcher/receiver assemblies, pipeline alignment sheets, and site grading packages.
- Prepare engineering calculation packages, spreadsheets, equipment data sheets, material take-offs (MTOs), and technical reports for P.Eng. authentication, ensuring client specifications and design inputs are accurately incorporated.
- Coordinate with CAD/Civil 3D drafting, GIS, and Geomatics teams to integrate topographic survey data, 3D laser scans, and subsurface utility data into engineering design packages and resolve technical inquiries.
- Adhere strictly to Midwest's Quality Management System (QMS), Professional Practice Management Plan (PPMP), and HSE safety requirements.
- Assist Project Managers and Senior Engineers with technical proposals, JobBook specification scopes, cost estimates, project track sheet updates, and internal/client project meetings.
- Participate in field site visits, facility walkdowns,
as-built verifications, and construction support activities to gain practical operational experience.
What You Offer
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Civil, or Pipeline Engineering from an accredited university.
- Registered, or eligible for immediate registration, as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) or Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC); or, for Ontario candidates, meeting the academic requirements for professional engineering licensure with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) and working toward the P.Eng. designation.
- 1 to 4 years of progressive engineering, co-op, or internship experience in oil and gas, midstream pipelines, mechanical facilities, or consulting engineering.
- Foundational knowledge of Canadian pipeline and piping codes (CSA Z662, CSA Z245, ASME B31.3, ASME B31.4, and ASME B31.8) and midstream deliverables (isometrics, site and valve assembly plans, BOMs, hydrotest plans, and DBMs).
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and working familiarity with AutoCAD / Civil 3D; exposure to piping stress analysis software (AutoPIPE) is considered a strong asset.
- Valid Class 5 Driver's License and willingness to occasionally travel to field sites or client facilities; current oilfield safety certifications (CSTS, H2S Alive, Standard First Aid) are an asset.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills for preparing technical reports, calculation notes, and collaborating across multidisciplinary teams.
Key Competencies and Behavioral Attributes
- Highly motivated technical team member eager to apply engineering
