Job Title: Mechanical Design Engineer
Job Description
This role focuses on the design and development of high-speed automation equipment within a life sciences environment, supporting machines that serve medical device and pharmaceutical applications. The Mechanical Design Engineer performs detailed engineering calculations, creates and reviews mechanical designs, and ensures compliance with applicable standards and customer requirements. The position involves close collaboration with customers, internal engineering teams, and vendors, as well as periodic leadership of small design teams to deliver high-quality, reliable automation solutions.
Responsibilities
Perform detailed engineering calculations related to strength of materials, speeds, horsepower, temperature, pressure, and force as they apply to machine and tool designs. Analyze engineering drawings and specifications to determine required shapes, dimensions, hardness, and other characteristics in the development of equipment, processes, and products. Produce concepts, working drawings, detailed drawings, and bills of materials for equipment, sub-assemblies, and products using AutoCAD and SolidWorks.
Analyze designs and systems to ensure compliance with applicable standards, including OSHA, CE, and customer-specific requirements. Review drawings for accuracy, appropriate material selection, proper machining techniques, finishes, hardness, and overall manufacturability. Liaise with customers to clarify requirements, present design concepts, and ensure alignment with project expectations. Collaborate with in-house technical and engineering staff to resolve design challenges and integrate systems effectively.
Coordinate with vendors to obtain technical information, specifications,
and support for components and systems. Communicate requested design changes to the Project Lead or Team Lead and ensure they are accurately implemented. Provide regular progress updates on assigned tasks to the supervising designer, ensuring transparency on status and issues. Formalize, maintain, and update drawing documentation to reflect current design intent and revisions.
Periodically supervise the mechanical design effort at the project level, delegating tasks and guiding a small team of designers. Organize project documentation, including quotes, project plans, correspondence, requisitions, drawings, and schedules for projects under your supervision. Estimate time and resource requirements for design tasks and communicate these estimates to the Team Lead or Project Lead.
Contribute to the design of high-speed automation equipment and assembly machines incorporating servo systems, cylinders, bearings, robotics, vision systems, sensors, switches, and other mechanical and electrical devices. Essential Skills Proven mechanical design experience in automation environments. Hands-on experience with machine design, including high-speed machinery and assembly machines. Proficiency in SolidWorks for 3D modeling and mechanical design.
Ability to perform engineering calculations related to strength of materials, speeds, horsepower, temperature, pressure, and force.
Experience designing parts and components that integrate effectively within larger systems. Knowledge and practical use of pneumatics and hydraulics in automated equipment. Knowledge and practical use of electrical devices such as switches, load cells, LVDTs, sensors, and related components.
