Construction Resident Engineer – Civil/Structural
Location: Operating open-pit gold mine in Northern Ontario (rotations start and end in Timmins)
Rotation: 14 days on / 14 days off, 12-hour days, cross-shifting with a fellow resident engineer
Reporting: Construction Superintendent, with day-to-day direction from the site Construction Lead
Start: Flexible. The client expects successful candidates to give their current employer proper notice.
Engagement: Long-term contract through Phase Consulting, hourly The project A leading gold producer is in the second year of a major expansion at one of its Northern Ontario operations, expected to reach around $1 billion. The programme includes two recent portals to take the mine underground, underground conveyors and crushing, new process buildings, paste plants, camp expansions and a potential mill expansion.
The 2027 pipeline already includes 18 large construction packages, plus a series of smaller projects. The programme is expected to run 5 to 10 years, and the site construction team is growing.
The client runs an owner-managed model. A front-end team awards the engineering, procurement and execution contracts. Once construction begins, budget and scope pass to the resident engineers.
The role
You will own the civil and structural scope of several construction packages in the field at once, from contract award through turnover. The role combines resident engineer, project manager and construction manager. It sits between the owner’s engineering team and its general contractors.
This is a field role, not a design role. You will resolve constructability issues on site, make and document decisions within the design intent,
and relay field conditions and proposed fixes to remote engineering firms. A key part of the role is structural work inside the operating plant, where changes must be planned around production.
Key responsibilities
- Act as the owner’s technical lead on site for earthworks, concrete, foundations and structural steel.
- Manage structural modifications in the operating plant (brownfield), including member change-outs and repairs to existing heavy structures, coordinating with operations and the engineering firm.
- Resolve constructability issues in the field with contractors, and send drawing discrepancies and proposed fixes to engineering with clear mark-ups and options.
- Review and respond to contractor RFIs, substitution requests and field changes.
- Assess contractor change requests against the contract, IFC drawings, geotechnical data, daily reports and quantities, and decide what is in and out of scope.
- Manage the budget for each package once it transfers from the front-end team, and monitor contractor schedules and cash flow.
- Enforce quality: review ITPs and QA/QC records, authorize pours, and manage non-conformances and tolerances.
- Uphold safety and environmental requirements, including hazard identification and pre-task reviews.
- Maintain thorough crossover notes and lead a short handover call at each rotation change.
Technical scope
- Bulk earthworks, building pads and compaction control.
- Concrete: mix design approval, rebar and cover inspection, formwork sign-off and cold-weather placement.
- Structural steel and heavy industrial structures in new and existing buildings, including the process plant.
- Corrosion and durability protection in an industrial setting.
- Drainage, culverts and water management.
- The applicable Canadian standards (CSA A23.1/A23.2, CSA S16).
What you will bring
- Professional Engineer licence (P.Eng.) in Ontario or another Canadian province or territory.
- Field-based resident or site engineering experience on capital projects in mining or heavy industrial construction.
- Hands-on structural experience on site, ideally brownfield work in operating plants such as mills, concentrators, smelters or refineries.
- Experience directing contractors and making field decisions without returning to the office.
- Working knowledge of cost control and change management, including package budgets, change orders and scope disputes.
- The judgment to hold the line on specifications and quality when schedule pressure is on.
- Professional liability insurance; Phase will advise on requirements.
- Comfort with remote site life, 12-hour days and a 14/14 rotation.
Rotation and travel Day 0 is travel to Timmins, including a 30–60 minute crossover call with your counterpart. Day 1 is the first full working day on site. Day 14 is the final site day, with return travel to Timmins. Travel to site, accommodation and meals are provided, travel time is compensated, and the working day begins on site.
