ABOUT ELEVATION CAPITAL
Elevation Capital is a group of internationally impactful companies spanning consumer packaged goods, hospitality, technology, real estate, non-profit, and venture funding. Run by a highly entrepreneurial self-made founder and supported by accomplished executives across its business units, the group operates globally with interests in the United States, Canada, Europe, and the Caribbean. Our mission is to create and deploy capital for a better world.
THE MANDATE
We are seeking a hands-on Engineering Manager to take direct ownership of the day-to-day management and execution of a developing team of applied AI engineers. Reporting to the Chief of Staff, AI Strategy and Deployment, this leader will coach engineers, manage performance, control delivery and releases, and establish the operating discipline required to reduce repeated senior intervention.
This is not a project-management position and it is not a senior individual-contributor role with informal mentoring responsibilities. The Engineering Manager will be the team’s accountable people manager and delivery owner while remaining technically engaged in architecture, code review, debugging, production readiness, and incident response.
SUCCESS IN THIS ROLE
- Engineers have clear ownership, measurable expectations, regular feedback, and individual development plans.
- Product priorities are translated into realistic technical plans, capacity decisions, and dependable release commitments.
- Code quality, automated testing, deployment, monitoring, incident response, and recovery operate through consistent engineering practices.
- Performance concerns are addressed promptly and directly, with documented expectations and follow-through.
- The Chief of Staff is no longer the default escalation point for routine team management, delivery coordination, or release decisions.
- Validated AI prototypes become maintainable, secure, customer-ready software with clear support and maintenance ownership.
IDEAL CANDIDATE The ideal candidate is a proven engineering people leader who combines strong software judgment with disciplined team management. They have formally managed a small product engineering team, including direct reports, coaching, performance feedback, workload allocation, and accountability for delivery outcomes.
They remain close enough to the work to challenge architecture, review code, diagnose production problems, and step into implementation when senior judgment is required. They can turn ambitious product priorities into credible plans, explain tradeoffs clearly, and protect the team from constant priority shifts without adding unnecessary process.
They understand AI-assisted software development and can evaluate both generated code and agent behavior. They use AI to increase engineering leverage while maintaining clear standards for quality, security, observability, and production readiness.
WHAT YOU WILL OWN
- Directly manage and coach the applied AI engineering team through regular one-on-ones, clear goals, timely feedback, development planning, and documented performance management.
- Set clear individual ownership, delegate work at the right level, address missed expectations, and build stronger technical judgment through code review, pairing, and post-incident learning.
- Own day-to-day engineering execution across assigned products, including estimation, capacity planning, sequencing, dependencies, delivery risk, release readiness, and stakeholder communication.
- Translate validated product requirements into architecture, delivery plans, and maintainable software, remaining hands-on in design, debugging, and implementation when needed.
- Establish and enforce practical standards for code review, automated testing, deployment, monitoring, observability, incident response, service recovery, and root-cause follow-through.
- Evaluate AI-generated code and agent behavior using realistic test cases, failure analysis, human approval points, and controlled access to tools and data.
- Accept prototypes through explicit handoffs and establish documentation, support coverage, maintenance ownership, and production operating expectations.
- Partner with Product and Security to clarify requirements, data boundaries, access controls, launch criteria, and customer commitments before release.
- Escalate only the architecture, resource, security, or portfolio-level decisions that require senior involvement, supported by evidence, options, and a transparent recommendation.
- Support hiring and onboarding as the team grows, while raising the performance bar across existing engineers.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE
- Typically 6+ years of software engineering experience, with equivalent demonstrated capability considered.
- At least 2 years of formal engineering management or direct people-leadership responsibility, including coaching, performance feedback, and addressing underperformance.
- Demonstrated success improving the performance, judgment,
and delivery consistency of developing engineers.
- Personal accountability for production software, technical delivery, releases, monitoring, incident response, and service recovery.
- Strong application, API, data, and cloud fundamentals, with practical experience in automated testing, deployment, and observability. No specific cloud platform is required.
- Experience reviewing AI-assisted development and evaluating model or agent behavior in realistic operating conditions.
- Ability to manage competing product priorities, plan team capacity, identify dependencies, and make delivery tradeoffs visible to stakeholders.
- Master’s degree in software engineering, computer science, or a related field.
- Able to work remotely in Canada outside Quebec and collaborate effectively with a distributed team.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE
- Helping an internal tool or validated prototype become an externally supported SaaS product.
- Agentic workflows, AI evaluation, production LLM applications, or applied AI platforms.
- Founder-led, venture-building, or multi-product environments with changing priorities and visible accountability.
WHO YOU ARE
- A practical people leader who enjoys developing engineers as much as solving technical problems.
- Direct and supportive, with the judgment to delegate ownership without lowering the quality bar.
- Comfortable making decisions with incomplete information and revising them when new evidence appears.
- Calm during production incidents and disciplined about follow-through after service is restored.
- Able to explain architecture, risk, performance concerns, and delivery tradeoffs clearly to technical and non-technical partners.
- Energized by small teams, ambitious products, fast learning cycles, and visible accountability.
WHAT WILL SET YOU APART
- You have inherited a developing engineering team and can quantify how you improved individual capability, delivery predictability, and accountability.
- You can show how your management reduced the need for a CTO, founder, or senior technical leader to intervene in routine delivery and people issues.
- You have prevented repeat incidents through better engineering practices without creating unnecessary bureaucracy.
- You have introduced responsible AI-assisted development practices that increased speed while protecting quality and security.
- You have personally helped move a prototype into reliable customer-facing production.
COMPENSATION
This position offers a competitive base salary based on experience, along with health benefits and opportunities for career growth within a rapidly expanding group of companies.
