About the role
The Deputy Editor works with the Managing Editor to develop, edit and publish The Hub’s journalism and commentary. It’s a hands-on role covering the whole publishing process, from story ideas and commissioning to editing, fact-checking and getting pieces live. This is a Calgary-based position, working with our team across Canada. You’ll work directly with contributors, manage the editorial calendar, and help shape new formats and workflows, including the responsible use of AI tools. You’ll also support the Alberta Bureau Chief on Hub Hits, our YouTube interview series. What you’ll do
• Develop story ideas and shape the editorial agenda with the Managing Editor
• Work with authors on pitches and drafts, from concept to final copy
• Commission articles and manage contributor relationships
• Edit, copy edit and fact-check for clarity, accuracy, and style
• Vet incoming submissions
• Prepare and schedule articles in WordPress and keep the publishing calendar on track
• Help build productive editorial workflows, including AI-assisted ones
• Book guests, research, and prepare briefing notes for Hub Hits interviews
• Occasionally report and write What we’re looking for
• Excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills, with strong attention to detail




• Sound editorial judgment and strong research and fact-checking skills
• Experience working with writers to develop ideas and improve their work
• Strong organization, and the ability to manage multiple deadlines while working with a team across Canada
• Familiarity with WordPress or a similar CMS
• Comfort using AI tools for research, editing, and publishing, with an understanding of the need for accuracy and human oversight
• Strong communication skills and the ability to give constructive editorial feedback
• Real interest in Canadian politics and public policy, and a clear understanding of what resonates with Western Canadian audiences What success looks like A steady pipeline of strong content, polished work published on schedule, good relationships with contributors, and better editorial processes. Salary $65,000 per year
